Media Center 11.0.106 Alpha Available
« on: October 19, 2004, 12:40:55 pm »

We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your view schemes.  Some plugins still do not work.

We recommend that you use MC10 below, but if you want to use MC 11 while we're building it, PRICES are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110106.exe  [see price link above]

Recent Changes

11.0.106 (10/19/04)

1. Fixed: MC could use 12/31/1969 as the album for DVD files in some cases.
2. Changed: Portable synchronization with m3u playlists will not include a leading '\\' in the m3u filepath on the portable device.
3. Fixed: Library Server didn't handle transcoding to the same codec properly.
4. Fixed: Right-clicking on a playlist list in the Action Window wouldn't always work properly.
5. NEW: Files can be dropped directly on "Build Playlist" in the Action Window to build a new playlist.
6. NEW: Added checkboxes next to the folder list in Import Media to allow easily switching what folders get searched for each import.
7. Fixed: Adding a folder to 'My Computer' wouldn't start in-place editing of the new folder's name.
8. Fixed: When adding the same menu (i.e. 'File') to multiple bars, menus wouldn't always open from the proper bar.
9. Fixed: Improved drag-n-drop logic to Media Library to only show both 'Move' and 'Copy' when it makes sense. (moving / copying view schemes)
10. Fixed: Library Restore wouldn't empty the destination directory before restoring the library -- possibly causing load failures or other strange behavior.
11. Fixed: Deleting items from the tree could cause the item to not properly be removed until the tree was collapsed and reexpanded.
12. Fixed: Right-clicking a tree item could also act like a left-click (switching views) in some cases.
13. Fixed: The 'Remove empty folders?' prompt could appear twice in a row in some cases.
14. Changed: Improved auto-complete speed when dealing with large lists. (like the Name field)
15. Fixed: Library Server handled QuickTime files incorrectly (looping).
16. Fixed: Duplicate files could get added to the library after performing external changes.
17. Changed: Right-click actions in the tree will rerun a smartlist instead of using the visible file list. (required for split view support)
18. NEW: The split view being controlled is changed by clicking inside the view. (instead of through a menu)
19. Changed: Split views are percentage based instead of 'bottom window pixels' based.
20. NEW: The number of split views visible is saved between sessions.

11.0.105 (10/15/04)

1. Changed: New handheld options page would have an extra border around it.
2. Fixed: Some controls like dividers wouldn't draw properly.
3. Fixed: My computer views wouldn't properly appear.
4. NEW: DVD fast forward / rewind rolls through seek speeds -- press play to stop seeking. (like a TiVo, etc.)
5. Changed: Added 16x forward and 16x reverse to DVD playback.

11.0.103 (10/15/04)

1. NEW: Many optimizations to UI layout engine -- making sizing and view switching faster.
2. Fixed: MC better handles MP3 files with invalid Xing headers.
3. Changed: Portable 'Options' is integrated with general 'Options' interface.
4. Changed: Building of large tree structures (Media Library, etc.) is faster.
5. Fixed: Portable track display bug introduced in 11.0.99
6. Fixed: Portable synchronization space available was not updating correctly. Also, selected playlists were not updating in the transfer queue.
7. Fixed: Files not unlocking properly when converting files on the fly to Portable Devices.84.
8. Fixed: Clicking OK on devices options page would crash MC (from rip action window).
9. Fixed: Smartlist changes would not always show up as expected when returning to a view until MC was restarted.
10. Changed: Internal volume control uses a logarithmic scale so half-volume sounds more like half as loud to a human ear.
11. Fixed: Files with # in the name were not streamed by Library Server
12. Changed: Increased the auto-complete combobox item limit from 2048 to 8192. (will show <too many items to list> after that)
13. Fixed: Some actions like dropping files on a playlist or doing a Send To > CD Drive would show an unnecessary menu asking "Move or Copy."
14. NEW: A mapped network drive can be accessed as a portable device if the volume label is entered in Plugin Manager->Portable Devices->Configure
15. Changed: Scanning for fixed and remote drive portables must be enabled in Tools->Options->Handheld Options for MC to scan for these drives.
16. Fixed: Tree would not auto-expand when clicking outside of the item text. (even though the selection would change)
17. NEW: Added .url to the import list for web-page type documents.

MC 11 Improvements

  • CUE file playback support with sample-accurate MP3 seeking
  • Many Theater View enhancements
  • Animated Direct3D file browsing
  • Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)
  • Vastly improved database engine capable of handling 100,000's of files and large amounts of metadata (lyrics, bios, etc.)
  • Several memory and speed enhancements -- like database and skin unloading when minimizing MC
  • Much of MC's interface can be translated to other languages
  • Integrated database import and update with smart broken linking repairing, and other nice features
  • MC can run with guest permissions on Windows 2000 / Windows XP
  • New view customization system with more flexibility for thumbnail size, text, etc.
  • Options dialogs reworked -- several small options added
  • Added multi-zone synchronization
  • Added Album Gain support
  • Document support with full text searching / indexing
  • Pane auto-sizing
  • Tile view that allows fully customizable Track Info style tiles to be used in file lists
  • New database caching layer that makes a huge speed difference in many areas of MC
  • File tagging happens in a background thread so MC can continue to be used while it's saving tags
  • Basic image editing
  • Enhanced album grouping for pictures so pictures taken together get grouped without any user intervention
  • Preview mode to only play the intro of songs
  • Video CD playback support
  • Audio resampling uses Shibatch's high-quality SSRC filters

When right clicking on eg a "genre" in the panes and choose "play", it does not play the selected genre only but plays the complete library

** edited **

When clicking on "send to", it says "no files elected"

Still missing the Album art "mini" icons in detail view. Could this be an option (or just disply them as in previous builds)??

Thanks

Can there be a more visible way to see which view is active when using split screens ?

Sometimes it's hard too see which one is active, when then navigating via the tree, the wrong screen gets updated.

When using split screens, the search will search in both screens.

Can it be configured so that it only searches in the active screen ?

Bugs:

1. Import with "Fix or remove broken links" option removes the CUE sheet based tracks from the library. (Bye-bye to tags!)

2. MC is still making error messages when CUE tracks are tagged (if the changed fields have "Store in file tags" option enabled).

3. It is a bit difficult to organize tracks which are imported from the CUE files. I imported also the main file, selected all and asked MC to move the "files" from properties to the correct folder. MC renamed the path correctly, but every reference changed from .mp3;n to .mp3_n (n is the sequence number). I had to do a "Find and Replace" to correct the references. Because CUE tracks don't have external tag containers location changes must be internal.

MC disagrees with me about complete albums. I have correct track numbers, but because the same folders contain also imported and tagged album art images (without track numbers) MC don't see the albums as complete. MC should count only audio files.

I found some my mistakes and now things seem to be back to normal...

Still seeiing thsi anomoly in the tree view:

I have my dirve with music files set up as Artist/Album/files.
When I expand "Disc Location" in the tree then exapnd an Artist folder with multiple sub-folders I also see at the top of the sub-folders an entry such as "All(3)" where the "3" correctly indicates the number of subfolders.

The bug is that if I select the  "All(3)" listing the right hand panel shows every file on the drive not just the contents of the 3 sub folders as I would expect.

Or am I misunderstanding?

This is awesome.  Would it also be possible for all views (instead of just the topmost) to remember their last contents, between sessions?

A problem I saw with playlists a few builds ago is back.
I have a combination playlist, it uses two other Smartlists.
When I use it, I see the selections and order they will be played.
If I click the Play button or right click and choose play, the list that is shown is not the selections that are played.
Seems like playing the list reselects it for Playing Now.

I think the Library Browser needs "Back", "Forward" and "Home" buttons.

Beginners may prefer a few simple tabs (such as the Library Browser) on the left instead of the tree.

Build New Playlist function causes MC to crash.

Yes, it does (from Action Window and during the playback).

It was not very pleasant, because the soundcard got a serious machine gun syndrome.
Actually, I don't know how to stop that sound. I guess I have to reboot.

Delete empty folders does not delete empty folders.

I moved a bunch of albums with the Rename File From Properties to a temporary folder. I noticed that "delete empty folders" did not work in the original directory. I moved the files back again to the original directory and again, the now empty folders from the temporary directory were not deleted.

Hidden files?

Nope. The only files moved to the new directory and back again were the audio files that MC moved in the "Rename Files" process. Besides, I checked, no files such as desktop.ini. I have my file mgr set to show hidden files.

The only mitigating factor I can find is that I was moving hundreds of folders at a time. Maybe it overloaded MC or Windows?

*BUG*
MC 11.0.106 does not care about chosen criterias in Media Library

1. Selected Audio (using Artist, Album, Genre and Rating in view pane I believe it's called)
2. Selected Rating ?,4,5
3. Right-click -> Play
The result is that MC plays all files, including files rated 1, 2 and 3.

Very minor thing, but when you restore a library, could they be listed in date order (descending) rather than alphabetically as it is now?

When ripping a CD i occasionally get a popup saying there is a problem with the file, is it being used by something else etc.

The file is brand new, in a new directory, so it can't be to do with other things "owning" it. The mp3 seems to complete OK, but leaves behind a .MP3.XXXXXX file in the directory.

Not major - but a bit annoying.

1- Although the Year is shown correctly (i.e. 2004) the Date shows the  long format until manually edited (MC assigns some other date during import or tagging).

2- MC misses Cover Art already in the Cover Art folder due to variables such as articles (the, a, etc), case of characters in the filename, accents (as in Bouree').  MC already can ignore articles in the library, perhaps this can be extended to the 'Quick find in file/ cover art directory" searches, or perhaps offer the nearest matches as options.

3- MC will create illegal filename lengths when using 'Rename files from properties', rather than truncating them or warning before the rename occurrs. This creates "corrupted" files which later crash MC and makes the files unusable..

Hi guys,

I'm still getting erratic behavior with portable transfer w/ re-encode.  Here's what's been fixed:

1) No more locked files stuck in \temp directory

Unfortunately here's the latest behavior:
1) If I luck out, the first song of many that I transfer may do so and have its tags transferred too - this is the same in the last few builds
2) 38 times out of 45 I've ended up with a 0 byte file on the portable - this is new behavior
3) 5 times out of 45 I've ended up with the file on the portable in its entirety, but with no tags - this is the same in the last few builds - and the error "Media Center encountered errors while tagging and moving files.  Check that the files exist and are not in use by other programs.  Tagging error: songname.mp3

These are all randomly selected lossless .wma's tagged using Media Center, converted on the fly using the portable transfer wizard.  If I do a Convert Format... instead, and point the destination to the portable (my drive K:), the transfer/conversion works every time.

Thanks guys,

-Doug

UPDATE:  If I disable "Update tags when file info changes", I get 100% success on converted but tags are not transferred at all (that part makes sense I guess).
