Historically I have primerily used MC to organize / play my audio files (all in APE Lossless). Increasingly, though, I alsi would like it to organise / play my videos, ripped DVD's etc. 

Unfortunatly MC has a material weakness here as it is based on Quicktime and the latest version by far does not support all the latest video codecs.  I would really appreciate having some more flexibility as to which player I owuld like to have at the core of my Video playback. Currently that choise would be the Nero ShowTime application as this supports the latest and greatest H.264 compression standard which I use to store my DVD in high end quality.

Is this something the MC team is planning to address?

That's not the case.  MC uses the QT playback engine for MOV files, but supports other formats natively or with the WMP engine.

I'm sorry, but I don't know H.264. 

The more esoteric you get, the less likely it is that many players will support it.

Please provide more details on what you're doing and what you need.

Jim, Not that esoteric: Its the advanced video codec (AVC) that is the about to become the new norm for MPEG4 compression.

I use Nerodigital to encode my videofiles into MP4 Format. However, if I try to play those in MC11 I get a message that the codec used is not supported by Quicktime.  Even if I set under options to use the Windows Media Player (which does play these files!) I still get the same error message

In MC's playback options, try changing the video playback to use MS WMP's engine.  It may work.

Jim, as mentioned in my previous note, I have set that option to use WMP. But it still refers to a Quicktime Error

Sorry, but is really nobody in a position to help me with my problem on playing mp4 files encoded with Nero Digital within MC11?  Given that Nero is one of the market leaders in DVD encoding it is surprising that MC11 does not support their format

hi,

i had a thread about that before (i had the same plans as you do) -> but there is no chance (afaik) to play mp4 files encoded with nero-avc. i even had probs with some avi-files, that were played by wmp.

you will still have to stick with zp/vlc and so on.

Well it would appear that there is certainly interest out there for the new AVC standard... how about adding support J River? I too have recently switched from divx encoding to Nero Digital (mp4) which uses AVC. It certainly isn't esoteric - more and more people are shifting from the dated video compression codecs; it's just a shame there aren't too many players out there to support them yet.

Maybe being one of the few players to support mp4 files natively (or at least plugging into the Nero engine or something) would give MC an edge over competition?

I'm surprised that doesn't work in MC if you have the playback filter registered in Windows.

I know that I am able to play back ATSC Transport Stream files in MC using the Elecard playback filter. The Elecard player also supports H.264/AVC, so you might give that a try.

I'd love to use MC for video file management, but it really needs automatic file name based filtering,  like Meedio's (which is currently my HTPC front end), and better tags (Video Type, Name, Series, Season).

I.E.-
A file named:
Battlestar Galactica.01x12.Kobols Last Gleaming (1).avi

Should get filtered as:
Show: Battlestar Galactica
Season: 1
Episode: 12
Title: Kobol's Last Gleaming

Meedio still has many weaknesses, but it's powerful filtering capability keeps me using it as my library front end (note that I still use JMRC for fitering and management of audio).

You can use Fill Properties From Filename tool for that.

I would use e.g. this string: [Artist].[Album]x[Track #].[Name]

It is also possible to make new library fields like Show, Season, Episode, Director, etc.
MC already has automatic fields for Media Type (video) and File Type (avi)

For example, here's what library fields I have for my Babylon 5 episodes:

I'd love to understand this in some more detail: Where do you register this Elecard player? Maybe it is possible to do the same with the Showtime Player (which is the native Nero player that handles AVC / H.264
