Registration problem XP
« on: November 26, 2004, 05:35:32 am »

I've tried to register MJ 8.0 in XP and wasted two Restorations with no result. Any clues? Whenever I execute the small restoration program (either from the Hard Drive or the Internet link) it says (in Spanish) that Media Jukebox has encountered a problem and must close down. I've read all the FAQ's and lots of messages on the restoration subject in this forum, to no avail.

Please, help.

next time save the registration to a file and you will not have this problem
as for your other problem you never said what version of MJ8 you have.

if it is not 8.0.400 then you should upgrade it

that spanish lingo is coming from windows

Thanks for the quick replay.
I'm using the latest version of Media Jukebox: redownloaded it.
I had saved the "*.mjr" to a file but repeated the process (silly me) just in case I'd done something wrong. I think it has something to do with the XP OS since the restoration works fine (tried it) on my other Windows 2000 OS. Is there anything I'm missing about the OS, any problems, bugs reported, options I should check, activate, deactivate, tweak...?

Thanks again.

make sure you do not have anything blocking the registration like maybe adware pro.

also use windows explorer 5.5 and above

you may wish to re-install MJ8 because if it is crashing there maybe an issue with the install.

there maybe stability issues with your computer, and normaly I would recomend you look at your video drivers for your video board.

Maybe someone else can help if you report your progress, system info (from under help in MJ) and any other error messages in detail you may see.

Thanks again for your help. This is my system info (taken from MJ):

Media Jukebox  8.0.400
Install Path: C:\Media Jukebox\
CPU: Intel Unknown 136 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 506 MB, Free - 136 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.2180
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2900.2180
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2900.2180
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2900.2180
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

I’ve uninstalled Ad-aware, Spybot, Spyblaster and Media Jukebox. I have reinstalled again only MJ. I left running Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm.

Then I tried to restore MJ and the program crashed again.

This is the error reported by the system:

AppName: media jukebox.exe
AppVer: 8.0.400.0
ModName: regcontrol.dll
ModVer: 1.0.67.0
Offset: 0000898c

I suppose the video card is OK, but then again I'm not sure I could say otherwise if it really was the reason why I’m not being able to restore MJ.

Sorry if things are getting a bit messy... I'm doing my best.

Javier.

Also Make sure your system date is correct

other than that i have never heard of this error

you could do a search for "regcontrol.dll" or "regcontrol" in the forum

Try using the install key that worked on the other PC.  It's good for 2 weeks.

Disconnect from the Internet if you need to, but try uninstalling the other security software you have running.  Spyware, virus checker, firewall, etc.

If the key works on one PC and doesn't on the other, then it's almost certain to be some other program preventing access.

Disabling software does not always work.

If you find a problem, please report it to the software vendor and let them know we'll help them find it.

Back again:

I have also uninstalled Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm (this is the reason why I didn't contact the Forum for a while). Nothing new happened: I kept getting the same Windows message and the subsequent crash of Media Jukebox.

The only other thing I can think of is that my laptop is a Toshiba that includes pre-installed software of its own: drivers and utilities for checking, monitoring, repairing the system. Could this be the reason? Has anyone installed Media Jukebox on a Toshiba laptop (Satellite A-50) with those software management utilities? It pains me to uninstall and reinstall the whole thing, especially if I don’t know beforehand whether I’ll be able to restore MJ or even if it’s worth the effort.

Thanks again for your time.

Are you certain that your Install Key has not expired?  It is good for two weeks.

Are you running as a user that has rights to write to the registry?

Did you try the alternate method of installing, by right clicking on the Registration Code when you use a restore?

I've installed most of the applications myself (the rest, together with the XP OS, were pre-installed in the laptop). I was never told I had insufficient rights to install, since my user is the Administrator. I’ll check that again just in case, since I’m not familiar with all XP administrator intricacies.
I have two Install keys: one was downloaded, I believe, on the 23rd and the other the 26th: they should work for that matter.

Were they e-mailed to you?

If so, try the alternate method I mentioned.

If you're the administrator, that will work.

That was it!
My computer name was PORTÁTIL (this is Spanish for laptop), and that seems incompatible with the Restore Key.
Thanks to you for locating the solution and to Mastiff for reporting it in first place.

Cheers!
