OT - "clicking" on burnt CDs
« on: January 13, 2005, 02:26:15 am »

I wonder if anybody can help me track down/solve a problem I'm having burning CDs. The burn process - in MC11, Nero and Roxio - always goes well and the CD is recognised by CD players, but the sound is very poor. There are quite audible "clicks" throughout the music in small clusters, and some tracks are completely distorted like a beat up old vinyl record. I guess there's a soundcard problem.

Others have reported similar problems I know when playing files - but the tracks themsleves play fine no clicks it's only when I try to burn them to a CD.

I've got an Audigy 2 Platinum Ex with the drivers fully updates and my system settings are below.

Can anybody suggest an answer to this - I'd be very grateful.

TIA. John.

What format, bitrate, etc are the files you are burning from?
What options do you choose in those apps, volume maximizing/leveling, others?

They're 128 MP3s - the MC settings are DSP with a 2 sec gap, no normalisation, 32x speed burning. Nothing fancy at all.

Have you analyzed one of the files with the clicks?
Also, have you tried burning with no options at all and at a lower speed?

Tried checking the files that have the click with something like mp3Trim to see if there are bad/missing frames? I know they play on the computer, but when changed to WAV and burned to a CD that may cause the hiccups you have.

Finally, are the clicks in the same place when you record the same song with the different burners?

Gotta be something in common here if the burns always have glitches with any burning tool.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply GHammer.

Yes you're right there has to be a common theme.

I wondered if it was a data transfer issue, checked that DMA was enabled etc and tried using the MS IDE controller instead of the NVidia one I had installed. No difference - still crackling and distortion.

I've copies the files to my other PC and burnt the same CD using my Pioneer 105 via MC and it was perfect - so I don't think it was the files themselves or the conversion process that was at fault. I swapped out my Pioneer for the Plextor in my main PC and tried again - perfect! So it's not the Plextor drive.

I've now put the Pioneer in my main PC and its acting a bit strange - not recognising CDs, taking a very long time to initialize etc so I guess it must be either the cable or the IDE connector on the m/board that is causing the trouble.

More messing around sadly....

Thanks again. John.

I'm glad you are on to something. And it's easier to replace a cable than to troubleshoot software!
