MP3 file validation
« on: October 24, 2002, 10:43:34 am »

Are there any utilities available which will analyze MP3 files (and other formats, if possible) and correct errors? This situation arose when I used a tagging program on a number of files, which then refused to play in WMP. Of course, now I use MJ, but I still run into the occasional file which even MJ will not recognize. I'm a novice to media files, so I don't know if there is a standard header format for MP3, or if glitches within the file can be recognized and corrected. Any suggestions for tested and proven utilities?

No, It is not possable to correct mpeg sync errors.

that said Mp3\Studio does have a option to do some correcting of mp3's but it is limited and it has an option that has been in the works for over 2 years, not sure if it ever will be in it.

as KingSparta says, sync errors are rarely fixable. There are other frame-related errors which can sometimes be addressed. Some tools with my opinions:

MP3Trim
shareware, overpriced but good if you have a lot of files to check.

MP3TagStudio
Shareware, the same as mentioned by KingSparta. Has some basic repair utilities, but is geared mainly as a tagging tool (the best, IMO).

MP3Surgeon
Shareware, fair price. Allows visual editing of MP3 files and saving without recompression.

MP3 Direct Cut
Free, lightweight visual editor for MP3's, but does recompress, IIRC.

VBRFix
(site appears to be down at the moment) Free, seems to fix errors that other programs miss.
