But I don’t know how. could some one please help as I am truly clueless about audio (never really had a need due to my pore hearing)

I have media centre 10 and can find the way to convert and rip files I just need to know how to make them Mono

Many thanks john

Hi Biggerjohn

Check in your DSP settings outputformat you can set it to mono there, that should save you the trouble of converting
Cheers Gerry

It is possible to select "1 channel" in DSP Studio for mono playback with MC, but if you need mono files for other purposes you could use this custom setting for making high quality mono MP3 files:

--alt-preset extreme -m m -b 64

Usually it makes about 100-140 kbps VBR mono files. The resulting bitrate depends on the complexity of the source material because the setting tries to keep the audio quality uniform.

If the material is speech instead of music you could try this setting:

-V 7 -m m --lowpass 10 --resample 22

It makes very small files, but the audio quality is not good enough for music.

EDIT

If possible try to avoid conversions from stereo MP3 to mono MP3. It will unnecessary lessen the audio quality since the lossy compression happens twice. It is better to rip the CDs directly to mono MP3 files.
