Two album artists
« on: February 23, 2005, 04:59:58 pm »

A number of my albums have two album artists.  These albums aren't compilation albums so I don't want them to be alphabetized as Multiple Artists.

Say for example I have an album performed by two artists, say Jack and Jill.  Using Library Browser -> Artist,  is it possible to have the album show up in the alphabetized list under "Jack" AND under "Jill" and not just under "Jack and Jill".

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

"Jack and Jill went up the hill" Charted at 01 in 1963

Dick Clark, did not care for Jack too much, Jill was hot

As for your question, I have no clue, but i don't think so

The only way I know to do that in MC is to make a copy of the file(s) and rename them Jill and Jack. It doesn't come up very often so I don't mind the duplication and the extra memory used for this purpose.

Now, when it comes to a name for a duo like "Jan and Dean", that's a group name and shouldn't be broken up, afterall they named themslves "Jan & Dean" not "Dean & Jan".

Unfortunately for many of us, you cannot do what you want (easily).

The "artist" field is a "string" type by default (Tools->Options->Library) so it cannot have multiple entries.  You could, like others have done, create a custom "list" field that allows you to input multiple entries (semicolon delimited) and use that.  You can edit the AlbumArtist field, so perhaps use that instead?

Then, change your views to use that field instead of the standard "Artist" one.  If you search the forum, I know you will find at least one conversation on this very topic.

It's been mentioned before, but J River could you please allow us to change default fields from 'string' to 'list' if we want to? At least give us the option...

Is this a wise thing to do ? Those default fields are the way they are for a reason, they are standard. If you change them no other player besides MC will be able to read them. In the case of default fields this can be a problem if you use a portable.

Its better to create a custom field that is similarly named which has this list functionality you need as was described above. Its easy to copy contents from one field to the next and adjust view schemes to show only your custom field instead of the default one.

I appreciate the responses.

I wouldn't mind making a custom field with list functionality.  However, I really like the library browser function of version 11 which allows to click on the big tabs on top to switch between artist/album/genre views.  Could I incorporate this custom field into the library browser function to have my custom field be one of the big tabs on top?

Does Library Browser use albumartist or albumartist(auto) to categorize?

Thanks for any help!

Library browser is really rough at this stage, i imagine with more time it will be more configurable.
