OT -- The Gates in Central Park
« on: February 19, 2005, 05:26:22 pm »

Matt and I spent a day in New York City this week.  On the way back to the airport, we had a little extra time, so we asked the taxi driver to take us through Central Park to see the new art installation called "The Gates" by Christo.

It's a series of orange metal frames with orange cloth suspended from them.  You can find out more by searching at Google in the news department.

They're only up for a short time, and they're a little odd, but fun.  Here are a few pictures.

Something sort of trippy about that....kind of like the guys who put out the signs for "Road Work Ahead" had some mushrooms and decided to have a little fun.   ;D

As a Manhattanite, all I can say is, "If you hate, 'em, they'll be down soon, and they didn't cost the city a dime."  They certainly stimulated conversation.  I haven't seen so many strangers talking to each other, amiably, since just after 9/11.  I'm sure you'll agree the Gates are to be preferred to 9/11.

It's okay when people have enough relationship and money to realize their nuts. It's not okay when people think that's good art. Greetings to all the real artists on this planet who will never get publicity! I don't hate it, it's just not worth give a ** about it

It cost how much?!
Blimey, their contractor must be Halliburton.

What is the purpose of art anyway? I have my own ideas, which go along the lines of art making one react (think or feel or resonating with one's own experiences), but I am interested to hear others' views.

The "Tiny Gates" linked above by Ghammer has turned out to be a big hit:
