Lossless ripping question
« on: June 23, 2005, 07:29:43 pm »

Is there any advantage to ripping to .wav and then convert to APE vs ripping to APE?

Not in the least..... Lossless is lossless..... You can't rip a better lossless copy...

If you use Secure ripping, You will get a log at the end of each cd, that will tell you if the rip is at 100%, or if there are flaws.

yeah there are plenty of advantages.

one is that when you are ripping a bunch of cds it is faster to rip and then batch convert.  also if you are converting to multiple formats suchs as mp3 for a portable player then you can convert from wav to mp3 first then from wav to ape.

Surely there is an advantage if you're going to do mulitple formats -  since all formats start from a wav you'd save one decoding for every additional format you used.

But for ripping to one format - it would chew through the CD's faster if you only go to wav and not encode, but by the time you factor in waiting for the conversions afterward, the overall processing time should be similar.  The time it takes to encode is going to be the same either way.  In fact it may be faster to encode on the fly, since you only have to handle the data once.

Either way, using secure mode is better for lossless since you get a report of the data quality.  But that's going to slow you down at least 50%.

Thanks for the responses.  I am currently ripping to wav, converting to APE for future use, and then converting APE to MP3 for my Ipod.

Is there any reason to NOT skip wav and rip to APE then convert to MP3?

Thanks again, Steve

If you rip straight to ape, you can have Audio Analysis during rip, and the Secure ripping.

I don't think you can do that with wave.... (I think)

No, no reason. In fact if you are going to wav then to ape then to mp3 from ape you are passing the one reason others say they like to rip to wav.

Me? I rip to ape then convert what I want to MP3 because the tags are there already with the ape. And most times I only want a few selections in mp3 format.

See replies 2 & 3.

Personally, I never have enough new CDs to make any difference.
