Expressions in Smartlists?

Is it possible to use Advanced Expressions in Smartlists?  I've tried, but can't get them to work.  The Help page (http://www.jrmediacenter.com/DevZone/DBExpressions.htm) says they can be used in Searches, but I had the same problem in the SearchBar
