Storing of Cover Art
« on: July 20, 2005, 07:10:49 am »

I have found Cover Art in: "J River\Media Center\Data\Thumbnails\Medium". There are folders numbered 0 to 15 and I have got the following :
In folder 0 is 1136.jpg....Shania Twain
In folder 1 is 5665.jpg....Shania Twain
............. 2 is 5666.jpg....Shania Twain
............. 3 is 7011.jpg....Shania Twain
now whilst I don't mind having lots of pics of Shania  ;) can anyone tell me why.
Conversely when I scan Cover Art it is captured in the Cover Art folder rather than the Thumbnails  ? Would love an explanation

Thanks

Those are the thumbnails, not the original cover art.  MC creates them automatically.

Thanks JimH
If those are the thumbnails created by MC where is the original cover art because it isn't in the Cover Art folder, only the ones that I've captured. Also why so many copies of same picture (re Shania example)

Please try a search here for other threads on "cover art".  Also, try Help/Contents in MC.

do I need to worry about the thumbnails?  Meaning do I need to back them up?  Are my cover art backed up when I backup Media Center 11?
I want to make sure I have everything.  My thumbnails exceed 12,000 but are in strange directory names.......can i delete them and will MC 11 rebuild them?

Thumbnails are rebuilt so you don't have to back them up.

Cover Art is not automatically backed up.

Great info, but I have 415 cover art files in a directory and the rest inside the tags.  I do have "store images in tags also" checked - does that mean my cover are is inside my file tag?  If so, how do I get the remainder into the tags?
What is the best way to handle this?

thanks

You don't need to backup cover art stored in files separately as long as you back up the music.

For more details on cover art, you might take a look at the many threads here on the subject.  The Help inside MC should also be useful.

I don't think the Help is updated after the recent cover art changes.

The new behavior is a bit unclear to me. I don't quite understand why cover art is stored inside the tags and externally. Is that intended to be an automatic backup system?

Though, I have not experimented with the "in tags" option. I have always used external cover art as "Next to file".

Alex B you are right
the documentation is lacking
I have selected store inside tags also - whatever that means.  I see that the cover art is in fact stored in the header, but is also stored once for each artist/album in the program file/jriver/data/cover art......
Why is that??  It just does not make sense to me.  I want it in the headers (ID3) only.......Therefore it is backed up if the music is backed up.
I back up my music and I back up my MC11 database along with the zip backups created by MC11 whenever I tell it to.
Is that All I need?

Tools->Options->File Location->Store images in Tag also (uncheck)

MC then won't store the coverart inside each track.

I prefer it this way and only have the cover art in the album folder.
