Database Empty after latest upgrade
« on: August 08, 2005, 10:06:35 am »

Hi,

I just upgraded my beta version 11 to the latest (build 11.0.310) and even though my library folder is untouched (all my playlist and jmd files are there) the library is empty and there are no playlists.

I searched my local and network drive (where the library is located) and there are no additional JMD files. Can anyone help? I had 14,000 songs cataloged.

Check where MC11 thinks the default library is.  File/Library/ Library Manager will show you.  Then copy the jmd files there.  Running MC11 should convert them.

I copied all the JMD files into the default library folder and ran MC11 and loaded that library. It didn't do anything -- the default library is just as empty as the other one. I didn't see it do anything special to convert it.

I have no idea what happened to your library and I am not sure about this, but it is possible that you have an automatically made backup zip file in this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\"YOUR USER NAME"\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Library Backups

It should be named like this: MC Library Backup (Default - "DATE").zip

If you find that file you can point Library Restore to it. (File > Library > Restore Library...)

Copy first the .jmd files you have already found to a new safe folder. It may be possible that a partial cure for them exists. A Library Restore will overwrite them if they are in the default library location.

In any case, you really should make library backups regularly. Especially before installing new program versions. (File > Library > Backup Library...)

I had the same issue.

My Database files and my Media files are both on network storage.

With one of the updates along the line my database suddently became "empty".  I don't remember which version it was, but I do remember that an older version worked fine on one PC, while a newer version on another PC stopped working.  I wasn't paying attention and updated my other PC as well.  Since I have local libraries too I didn't notice the problem initially.

Restoring a backup works fine, but I'm going to work my way through the versions to see if I can find one that works with the "damaged" library.  If I do I'll post here.

Unfortunately the bad back has kept me in bed the past few days :(

I haven't been up to actually looking at this, but I did find that my "non-working" library is about 7MB and the "working" library is almost 12 MB.  Both libraries should be identical as I have added no new content or information.

I still have my old MC10 backups and it looks like I may have to start with those and work my way up.  I have over 30 MC11 versions so it may take some time to find the culprit.  I suspect sometime after 11.199 something happened (based on date).

I save a backup after every session (and sometimes in the middle, depending on the extent of the changes) to protect against this very thing, but I am curious where the problem arose.

Note that the problem only appeared on my network library, and NOT with a local libary.  Both libraries referenced media on my network drive - the only different is where the library itself was located.

I had the same issue. Running the music from a networked drive. Completely disappeared! Not tragic though because I keep all important information in the file tags. Strange nevertheless!
