I've searched for this topic but came up empty-handed.

What happens is that when I try to import my files, the first 15-20 files will be added slowly with no interception, but the second the counter starts ticking away at high-speed (going through the files) the program crashes to desktop. The files are on a separate disk, about 12 000 in all. Tried both the very latest release and the latest stable, same thing. Any thoughts?

just wondering if you can check the hard drive to insure it is working properly.

if the "separate disk" is firewire or USB drive a reboot may fix the problem.

normaly if Media Center Crashes it is a bad media file but a bad drive or connection to the drive could do this also.

It's an internal drive (same filesystem). Working fine to my knowledge. What exactly is a "bad media file" (or rather, what kind of bad file could cause a crash)? Corrupted audio/video, truncated files, unsupported format? Will look into this, but I haven't run in to any problems with other apps. Thanks for your answer, though.

Try importing a single file type (mp3, for example).  The setting is under advanced in import.

Try importing a single directory.  Use Explorer, right click on a directory and use Media Center/Import.

it is hard to tell when the problem would be, do to lack of information. as i said it could also be a system problem.

what jim said may help in pointing to a file and maybe the problem.

Kind of stupid suggestion, but have you tried a check disc / verify disc / defragment?

Problem solved by importing file types separately, as suggest by JimH. My guess is that there is a possible conflict when importing several file types of which some require additional plugins to be downloaded in the process (as FLAC did for me). Thanks for your quick and astute support!
