Will SP2 screw up music downloads?
« on: October 08, 2004, 03:45:26 pm »

I read the following notice on a website called eMule and it has me even less anxious to download the new SP2 update from Windows.  Has anyone had trouble downloading music from the internet since updating to SP2?  Thanks.  azdood

"Microsoft released the Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP a few days ago, which will be distributed via the Windows Update within the next days. The SP2 is supposed to fix several bugs/exploits and to increase the security in general.
One new "security features" limits the amount of simultaneous incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts and slows down all connection attempts, as soon as a limit has been reached. Unfortunatly this limit is "hard coded" and cannot be turned off by the user (while worms and other malware can easily patch some system files to avoid beeing affected).

Since [we] try to connect to many sources within a short time period and a part of those sources are unreachable (for example if an user went offline), it is possible that [we could] trigger this limit - especially when downloading files with many sources. This will slow down finding and contacting sources which could lead to a slightly decreased performance in general, however we are still investigating on the excact impact..."

The only problems I've had was with installing media center after installing sp-2 with any type of spyware programs such as spyware guard spyware blaster, zone alarm, etc MC will get hang during installation, but once u disable thoses programs MC installed fine for me up to version 11.093. I had to uninstall the sp-2 for the latest version 11.098 other then that MC is the only program so far that I have had problems with. the new sp-2 was so bugs in it. so people it works fine with no problems, and some people sp-2 presents all kind of problems. I personly uninstall the thing for now because sp-1 works fine everything works, and I don't have security problems so for now I when back to sp-1

Yeah! I've had problems with p2p programs after installing SP-2. Now, i just keep the SP-1, and i have another programs to take care  of my security problems.

I had to reinstall the whole system due to security failure. So, if something is going to damage your system... it will, no matter if you have SP1 or SP2... My advice is: keep the SP1 and using your p2p programs.

This thread is almost a year old. SP2 is not news. Some people had network problems because SP2 changed the configuration.

I use SP1 on my PCs just because I haven't had any reason to upgrade (yet?). MS supports SP1 too and publishes security updates for it.

SP2 works fine for me withMC 11.  Jut make sure that you have a roll-back point if you want to uninstall it.
