transfer to another computer
« on: October 07, 2005, 05:24:21 pm »

Pardon my ignorance if this is well covered elsewhere, but some searches didn't turn up what I need to know. I have two computers running MC10...they're not networked or connected in any way. About a year ago I loaded MC and all my music files from PC1 to PC2. At that time I also transferred my library to PC2. Now that I have roughly doubled my library on PC1, I loaded all my files on a portable hard drive, deleted all my files on PC2 and reloaded the files from PC1 to PC2. I then did an "import media" on PC2 to build the library/database. In doing so, I lost all my playlists, tags, and other library data on the new library. I then did a fresh library backup on the source computer (PC1), loaded the backup file on a thumb drive, plugged it into PC2 and tried to restore it to MC on PC2. I obviously have done something wrong, because all my titles (approx 6,000) on PC2 are now X'ed in the first column and won't play. Can somebody PLEASE help me sort this out. I know it's possible because I did it before, but I'm missing something now. All I need to do is find out how to duplicate files and library from one PC to another without losing tags and playlists, using a portable hard drive and/or thumb drive.
Grateful for your help, Randy

Check the base path. Is the drive letter the same? Somewhere is a difference. You need to have the files exactly in the same folder structure.

Thanks Alex, this sounds like a possibility...but MC, library backups, and music files are all on Drive C on both computers. However, my transer media, the portable hard drive and the usb thumb drive are seen as different drive letters on the different computers....I don't see how this could matter as long as I backup and restore to the same drive letters (C) on the two computers. ? I'll try again with the library backups just to be sure.
