Over the last several months, I have on several occasions tried to install XP SPK 2. Three or four times now, during the reboot, the windows explorer crashes and it is not possible to boot into windows. This includes safe mode, and any attempt to activate system restore. Inevitably each incident is most always more than two weeks apart. So, each time I redownload J River, I use a restore. I have been using J River MC since Media jukebox version 8 or before. I still do not have service pack two installed on my computer, and finally I ordered service pack 2 on disk. With the proper explanation, I an hoping to get those restores reinstated. I lost more than 3000 music files that I ripped, and I no longer have those originals. If your restores would be actual backups of my music data, That would be incredible. But how different is J RIVER Media Center to use as opposed to Media player 10. For me it must be habit, but at the rate this restores are used, I may have to reevaluate my subscription. Your problem is not that uncommon. Actually SP2 is too big a step to upgrade in many cases, I always recommend a full install with a slipstreamed version. If that too fails you probably have a hardware error somewhere. Try to run a memory and CPU check, especially memory is a likely culprit.

I have not had problems installing SP2 itself, but I'm wondering if there is a clash somewhere between SP2/various anti-spyware software and media center.
I 've been using MC10 and had frequent crashes meaning I've had to reinstall. But with SP2, MC10 (or 11) doesn't want to. So each time I get a serious crash, I do a clean install of WinXp with SP1, then MC, then SP2 and everything else -- and this means my restores are steadily running out.
Now I'm on an MC11 trial, and will upgrade anyway, but these restores running out have been a real worry. However it's nice to know I can let J River know if I need some more, and I appreciate that the restore process is probably the best way to prevent piracy.

Regarding the loss of the music files themselves -- my way around that is to I keep them on a separate partition (or even separate physical drive) and back up, back up and back up...

After a vanilla OS installation you don't have to restore MC immediately in case the previous key has expired. You can run MC in trial mode until you are reasonably sure that the OS is stable.

A couple of suggestions for slipstreaming:

1. Download and install nLite, which is a freeware utility that will create a bootable XP installation disc, with service pack integration.  It also allows for permanent Windows component removal by your choice, integrations of drivers, tweaks, and hotfixes.  This is an awesome utility with an easy GUI.

2.  Call MS and ask for a replacement CD for Windows XP with SP2.  I had my original retail WinXP installation disc from 2001 (I think) and it had some scratches on it.  The first time I called MS they wanted to charge me $25 plus shipping.  I called back a few hours later, got a different agent, who never mentioned a fee.  I just had to provide the part number from the cd, pay a nominal shipping charge, and I had a new installation disc with SP2 within the week.  I used this one to create my nLite install disc.

A few additional thoughts: I'm a software junkie, and some of my installations of alphas and betas have resulted in the need to reformat and clean install windows.  I've learned the hard way to create a restore point and / or a ghost backup before each new installation and to test my other apps before moving on.  The last time this happened to me, my system was complete, when I linstalled the Stardox applications (Windows Blinds, Icon Packager, etc) and Quciken and MC 11 were among the programs that were not at all happy.
