Change "Single Artist" to "Multiple Artists"?
« on: September 28, 2005, 12:02:37 am »

I'm new to using Media Center, and I must say that after trying out "i-Tunes" for music collection management, Media Center RULES THE EARTH!!!!

But I'm having an isssue tagging my Soundtracks & Various Artists CD's.

I didn't have the check box checked for the "Use 'Assorted' for [Artist] on multi-artist albums" at first and I have already ripped/tagged several soundtracks and VA compilations.  And now I want to go back into these and change the Album Artist (auto) field from "Single Artist" to "Multiple Artists" (or whatever I want to customize them to (i.e. "Pulp Fiction ST - Various Artists").

Is there a way to do this, or does this somehow get locked down and is not changeable after encoding or intial editing???

Thanks for helping a noob!

If you check in explorer, you will probably find you have a lot of folders in the [artist]\[album] mask that contain a single file. You can use the rename from properties tool to fix that if you want to.

The [album artist (auto)] field works like so:

If the [album artist] field is empty and all the tracks in a given folder have the same [artist] it mirrors [artist]
If the [album artist] field is empty and all the tracks in a given folder have a different [artist] it 'auto fills' with "(multiple artists)"

if you populate [album artist], the [album artist (auto)] field will mirror [album artist]

Marko,

Thanks for the reply.

But I don't think I follow you.

How do I correct/edit the listing in the DB?

Everytime I try to change anything in the Album Artist (auto) field (editing listings in MC in the explorer tree, or in any of the main views), it then instantly changes the Artist field to be the same thing.

I want to keep the Artist field as is (with the correct Artist info), but change the Album Artist (auto) field to be some type of named various artist main title.

Thanx,

Hmmm:

have a look at this:

You don't edit [album artist (auto)] directly.
In this example, my various artists album "the sax album" has the tracks in a single directory, the artists are all different, and the [album artist] field is empty.
MC populates [album artist (auto)] with the default (multiple artists)

Now if I entered "Saxaphone players" into the [album artist] field, [album artist (auto)] would also become "saxaphone players" and each tracks' [artist] field would remain intact.

In your tag info window, if you click where it says "visible columns", "general", "extended" etc. etc. the category will expand or collapse depending on its current state.
