problem with Audioscrobbler plug-in
« on: October 01, 2005, 12:50:07 pm »

The Audioscrobbler plug-in for Media Center is near-broken for several people. Details here: http://www.last.fm/forum/8613/_/21079.

Here's my case: after starting MC up, I can get several (two to eight, usually) songs to submit correctly. Then I get "Submission failed: bad authorization." indefinitely until I press "Login". And the cycle continues.

We think the login failure is a problem in the plug-in.  The first post here has some more details:

I think this is a recent issue. Everything worked fine for me until a few days ago. Now, I see the same issue as Joshua. i think it's a change on their server and not a problem with the plug-in in this case. The only workaround I've found is to go to the audioscrobbler plug-in, click the log-in button, then the songs are submittedly correctly again.

Why is that? Is it because you can't use it as it is or because you feel like it lacks features? I for one am very happy with the plug-in as it is. I mean, I don't know what else it could do besides submitting songs to the AS server. Maybe get info back from your AS page and build automatic playlists and/or reports from the charts?

What I'd like to see, is a plug-in that would allow you to listen to last.fm radios from within MC. Now, that'd be great.

A little of both...I think like 1/3 of my songs haven't been submitted  :(

better caching!
iPod support! this can be done like this: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29776.0
it would be nice if you had the option to store in cache and submit later if you get an error, even if you close MC. And to have the plugin read playcounts from ipod as well and submitt tracks in the right order!

The ultimate would be if the plugin only submit every track in realtime when ipod is plugged in, and store in cache when ipod was unplugged.

Im shure JRiver could do this (or at least a basic plugin with ipod support) in no time!  ;D

Better last.fm support could attract more users/interest.
Built in Last.fm player in MC would be great too!

yeah, that'd be great. I saw someone adapted the audiopod plug-in to do just this but with the AS plug-in for iTunes.

That'd be wonderful. Although that wouldn't work if we finally get that automatic plug-synchronize-unplug ability.

I'm not sure if they could, but I believe they should: AS (or rather last.fm) is getting big and the ability to interact with it is becoming critical to some people when it comes to choosing a media player. Personally, I'm hooked and I don't think I can change now for a player that can't submit to AS.
If in addition you have an iPod... it can be very tempting to choose iTunes + iScrobbler + mod audiopod. That is, if you never heard of MC, or if you heard about it too late...

So yes, the JRiver people should definitely work on the AS plug-in if they want to compare to other player in that area, and they should find a way to play last.fm radios if they want to beat all the other players around (the last.fm player is a bit crappy, especially if you use FF rather than IE...)
