iPod soundcheck
« on: September 27, 2005, 04:22:12 pm »

9. Changed: iPod soundcheck field is now populated. Users should disable any replay gain settings for iPod and retransfer files(if they are on the iPod). Files will play with correct adjustment if soundcheck is turned on.

Might I ask you to elaborate this? How will track get "correct adjustment"? Fx, I would prefer the volume to be -50dB of what it is on the computer, since I use sensitive earphones. Well maybe not that much, but more than -24 dB which is the max of the negative loudness presently

-Rasmus

Edit: Made it more clear what I meant.

its crash on upload, i have not tested personally.  11.1 is very experimental, maybe we should wait for a more stable version.

Steve, would you care to elaborate?
What is the plan? Ie is the goal to be able to set the loudness of the music when uploaded or just to use the iPod's build in (sound) leveling options? Also, will you have to re-upload to apply changes with the new system as with the current system?

Sorry for the profusion of questions :)

Please try 11.1.31, available today.  Please use with caution.  It has a newer portable device sub-system.

Sorry, I should have said I was using 11.1.31...

I Plugged in my iPod, MC recognized a new device and I configured it to auto-sync a selected number of playlists, it ran the sync.  But after syncing all my playlists were once again gone on the iPod.  Now when I plug in the iPod and click on it in MC it says 'Working...' for about 20minutes now, and if I right click on the iPod in MC it says 'n/a device busy'.  Is it running the soundcheck on all my files?  If so, it would be nice to see some kind of status, like 'Working on file xx of xx'...  Should I let it continue Working?  I'll probably need to delete the iTunesdb and re-sync to get my playlists back.  Or should I just eject it and start from scratch?  Also, while it's 'Working' it would be nice to have the option to stop it.

So, it eventually finished 'Working..' on the iPod, ran another sync, but I still didn't have any playlists on the iPod.

Deleted the iTunesDB, and told MC to rebuild the database on the iPod.  When it finished I ejected the iPod from within MC, and now the iPod is in a continuosly repeating reboot...  Is there anyway to stop the reboots?  I tried to hold the menu and select buttons to force a reboot, but it won't stop.

I remembered how to do a hard reset, then mounted the iPod in disk mode, deleted the iTunesDB, ejected the iPod and did a soft reset... Now it's back.

I'm going to try Initializing the iPod in MC, and re-sync everything.

So I Initialized the IPod in MC, ejected it, and it was in a constant reboot again...

Please wait for another 11.1 build next week to resolve general issues with portables that are present in the current 11.1 build.

Do you need any help debugging this issue before I go back to 11.0?

Not sure if this is the problem or not, but for some reason after upgradding to 11.1 I had a ton of duplicates again.  But all of the duplicates were 'missing files', so I deleted all the missing files from my library in MC, and re-sync'ed with just a couple playlists, and it worked ok.

Should I continue with 11.1 or go back to 11.0?

I would not rely too heavily on 11.1 until the first build this week.

Steve,
Could I ask you to answear the original question; ie how does the new system work? Can we set the level to be whatever we would like?

Also, is alpha's iPod plugin stable enought for near-normal use?

Ta-ta,
R.

Currently you should plan to enable soundcheck and not use the option to modifiy the volume. Eventually we will make both systems work together to accomodate people with iPod Shuffle which does not have soundcheck. The combinantion of soundcheck and replay gain is the most accurate volume leveling you can get right now.

In regards to 11.1, it still is rough around the edges, but improving daily.

Just one question:

I'm planing to transcode my lossless music to apple-lossless.(easy ipod transfer)
At the moment they are wma-lossless, but when i transcode i lose my audio-anlyze tags.
Will the soundcheck feature work even in a mix of apple-lossless and mp3(replay gain)?

Will test this myself, but my ipod is dead and im waiting for a new one.

If the Replay Gain field is populated in MC with a value, that is what will be used to set the corresponding value in the iPod database for use with soundcheck.

Feedback on the New System
I have now had a chance to try out the portable system in MC 11.1. Generally I like the new volume-adjustment system better than the old. It's seems to get a more reasonable volume-level than what the old system could produce.
However, it would be nice if one could set the target volume on the iPod or adjust the volume further afterward. Fx, it would be nice if one could use the new system first, and then take additionally 24dB off (which is the limit in the old system).

However, 11.1 isn't all beer and skittles; the UI has certainly taken a step back.

First, there is no visually bar showing how many songs have been transfered. In 11 this would be shown in the action window. That was an excellent system.
The new system where you have to click on the iPod (under "devices") to see how many songs have been transfered. Not so handy...

Second, I can no longer assign certain playlists to be transfered manually. When clicking handheld in the action window I can only drag and drop playlists, I can't select a range of playlists as in 11. As I understand you can do this by selecting a number of predefined playlist which are to be synced with the iPod, but it is in no way as useful!

Third, playlists are name rather annoying (as in previous version), ie "100 most played (iPod playlist-100 most played)". Why not "100 most played"? The location in MC is irrelevant!

Fourth, the handheld icon is ugly! At some point MC used a nicer icon... Maybe you could even use different icons for different devices (and a non-white icon as default).

Cheers,
Rasmus

PS: The obligatory list of feature requests :):
  • Better volume adjustment procedure     ✓
  • Smart lists
  • iPod shuffle support
  • Full photo/video support
  • Better AAC support

Hi Rasmus,

First, a big cake for your birthday  ;)

then ...

the status bar still exist (at least in 11.1.38) ! It depends how you synchronize your ipod. If you use the icon in the lleft top corner in the action window after you select the ipod, then you can select the transfer option .. viola the status bar is there. If I use the big button then the status bar did not appear.
If you use the upper left icon then you could also select the option "configuration". There you can select your playlists to sync.

This should be added in 11.1. We will have to have parallel systems in order to accommodate volume adjustment on iPod shuffle which does not have soundcheck.

So there will be no gain or soundcheck for .m4a files?

Thanks you!

I think it works better since it's adjusted on the go. At the moment you do not set a specific value it just calculates by itself some way or another while transferring (i.e. in the old system you had to put a value which were subtracted from each track, you don't do now... However, as I understand this will be enabled again).

I think the volume level is more appropriate now, but I use quite sensitive earphones, so it might be to low for others.

So there will be no gain or soundcheck for .m4a files?
I doubt it. Unfortunately I can't check it since I'm a mp3-only-guy. There isn't full support for aac.

Not at this time as they cannot be analyzed by MC.
