"There was an error starting playback..."
« on: November 03, 2005, 12:31:22 am »

I'm using 11.0.316.  Every so often (way too frequently, ack!) when I doubleclick on a music file to play (typically an unprotected WMA or mp3 file), MC complains:

Quote
There was an error starting playback.
Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options.

...then it unsuccessfully tries to play the next two songs in the playlist and gives up.  Worse yet, I can't play any songs at all from that point on until I close and restart the app :|.  It's not the specific music files at issue; after restarting MC, I can play them just fine.  It's also not a memory issue; I have 2gb in this machine, and I'm nowhere close to using up all that memory at the moment.

Also, this is reproducible 100% of the time when I try to play a RealAudio file (I haven't yet installed RA on this machine).  I can understand it not playing, obviously, but it should require an app restart!

Try reinstalling your sound card driver.

Try switching playback from Direct Sound to Wave Out (or vice versa).  Tools/options/playback in MC.

MC requires either Real Player (Don't remember which version)
or Real Alternative to be installed to play Real Audio Files.

A link to information on the Real Player is here:

Not all versions of the player will work.

Hi there,

I appreciate the reminder about the RealPlayer stuff, but as I noted in my post, this is also happening at random with my wma and mp3 files.  That's the frustrating part.
