J River Streaming to other media centers
« on: November 03, 2005, 01:04:47 pm »

I have defined clearly what I would like out of my 'ultimate media center' software.
Maybe J River is it.

I would like to be able to stream the audio out of J River to other computers on my LAN
kind of like an internet radio station (I have prototyped this with winamp and analogx
internet radio broadcaster) This way If I cue up on the livingroom media center a song
or playlist it start playing, but if I go into my bedroom, I can turn it on and tell it to mirror
what is being played in the livingroom. Distributed audio via tcp/ip streams. that is what I
am looking to accomplish. (When i did this with winamp/analogx) there was always this
buffer that made it sound a little out of sync. I didnot like that.

your always going to have a buffer man.  unlikely you will ever find a solution that streams data instantaneously to another computer.  even odlschool analog systems have a sort of "buffer" so to speak.

sorry.

The biggest problem is the TCP/IP protocol itself. It reads check bits and often resends lost packets. It's designed to be an accurate data transmitter, not a streaming protocol. The usual HW and SW network components include various buffer stages.

Some proprietary protocols can handle real time streaming, but they work only in conjunction with dedicated professional HW components and devices. These products also carry a hefty "pro" price tag.
