Removing or preventing user from closing Media Center
« on: June 09, 2005, 10:26:14 am »

Hi,

I am currently running Media Center as a service and I would like to prevent people from shutting it down. I've set the service to auto restart but it will still interrupt the song that is being streamed from the Library Server.

I wonder if there is a way such that when you click on Close, it actually minimize Media Center to system tray instead? Of course, if using File->Exit, then we can still close Media Center but I want to prevent people from accidentally closing Media Center (which I do that often too) by clicking on the close button.

I wonder if it is possible to modified the skin XML file such that we can omit the close button or change it such that the close button actually minimize Media Center instead? Thanks!

Doesn't the new "Media Server" item in the MC program group do just that? Have you tried it? As far as I understand it keeps the server running until it is closed separately from the System Tray icon.

I am not sure how Media Server works now. The thing is I want to be able to let my computer just restart and have Media Server or Library Server running when Windows XP startup. The only way I figure that can work with the new Library Server is by using Media Center as service which is what I have done. Basically, right now is that I got Media Center running on startup (minimize) everytime my computer restarts just for Library Service. But since I usually use the same computer too, I want to prevent myself from accidentally closing Media Center by accidentally closing the close button.

Anyway, I've manage to change the main.xml for Bluesteel skin such that the close button actually minimize the Media Center while the Minimize button is removed from the main frame. It works for all I can see and I don't know if there is any bug being introduced with this minor change but it works for now so I am more than happy.

Come to think of it, when was Media Server introduce back in to the program group? I just realize that it is back in there!  :o

It is quite simple. It starts and keeps running the parts of MC that are needed for running the Library, Tivo and UPnP servers.

Here is the command line: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MC11.exe /MediaServer

It should work if you have configured Library Server to run when MC starts.

You can open and close the MC main program independently of the Media Server.

Thanks for the clarifications Alex! :) I just skipped a couple of months of MC 11.. and everything change so much. Oh and by the way, do you know if it is possible to lock one of the split pane such that it remains at one view while the other change?... (Just let me tapped a bit more of information out from your brain. :) )

Alex\escalflo could you please teach me how to get media center to startup upon a reboot? i'm using musiclobby through cinemar, and i'd like the media center (Musiclobby server starts automatically when media center starts up) to start up(i'll have it in minimized mode) when i reboot computer. I've looked in msconfig but i can't see mediacenter startup item there?

Please help

Also Escalflo I use the bluesteel skin also, could you teach me how to get rid of the close button as well?

Why not just create a shortcut to to "MC11.exe" /Start and put it in the "All Users" Start Menu in the Startup folder?
