Jerry Got Overruled
« on: November 30, 2005, 09:10:42 pm »

FWIW, the 30 years wrth of Grateful Dead concerts posted at www.etree.org are no longer available.  The remaining members of the band, most of whom need money more than Mr. Garcia does right now, have elected to make their concerts available only through paid download, and only as they get around to making them available  Fine, but that isn't what Jerry had intended for his music, Bobby!  (Just a brief personal perspective there.)

Now, I realize that there aren't too many Dead heads left after so many years, but if you haven't gotten your concert tracks, it's too late now.  '77 Dead shows, Betty Cantor-Jackson soundboard feeds, better than 90% of studio mixes on CD today; all gone, gone.

Of course, Britney Spears is still available....

Fortunately it looks like most of the concerts will be restored to the archive:

Yeah, widman, they did relent a little bit, but that's onlu the audience recordings.  You know, where the guy has a microphone clipped to the bill of his hat, then forgets about it when he goes to the restroom?  Or better yet, OD's, and you can hear two hours of people stepping over him and around him and rifling through his pockets for spare change?  I know there some fairly sophisticated digital filters out there, but it's tough to completely reduce the sound of the paramedics firing the defibrulator.

It's a darn shame, IMO.  There were some great soundboard recordings that are now just going to get warehoused in the interest of "packaging."

Nugs.net still has 46 or so Grateful Dead shows from 1968 until the present available for download. Lots of others. Still more for streaming.
They also have shows for sale. It's a pretty cool site.

www.nugs.net

or go straight to the downloadable (or stream if you wish) shows:

Wherever my son went in Indoneisa, Borneo, SE Asia, et al., back in 2000, the only American song any locals knew—and insisted they play for him—was "Hotel California". That was enough to cause me to strike those places from our vaction destination list.  ;)

Seger was ubiquitous growing up in the Detroit area, appearing at any and every gig. One day we had a surprise H.S. assembly featuring Bob and the then newly-christened Silver Bullet Band.

Geez, I'd forgotten about that. I was in a very bad garage band and played tracks off that album. I played bass guitar really badly and we had the biggest speakers we could afford and amps with volume dials that went past 10 to 11.
