Library Server & Remote Tagging.
« on: January 14, 2006, 12:08:57 pm »

Background:  Just spent six hours updating tags on a remote PC to a library server.

I assumed because I am attached to that library, that the tags would be updated on the library.  Certainly, no messages or warnings are displayed to the tune of "you cannot remotely update tags" or some such.

Unfortunately for me, it appears that MC cannot remotely update tags and does not A) Prevent you from updating on the remote or B) even tell you that you can't..........

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Only playcounts get updated.
All database fields are read only via library server.

This is quite bad.  Could JRiver at put in a block to stop editing
of tags when logged into a Library Server?

Yet more glaring base functionality missing in my opinion.  Quite simply there ought not to be any library functions in the menus and no editing should be allowed on the remote - if you cannot update, as zxsix suggests.

Ideally tag updates should be allowed (and I cannot see any reason why not, the only field that needs to be left alone is the file name / location, and surely J River have heard of record locking?).  But if J River deem it not possiblie - at the very least a warning should be displayed that no updating from the remote is allowed - would have saved me a lot of time (and anger when I found out six hours of editing was down the pan).

Not the first time I have wasted a lot of time on MC and ended up frustrated (and pretty sure it wont be the last).

It's all very well implementing all these bells and whistles.  Just make sure they are reasonably well documented or enough control is in the software that users cannot be led down a road to nowhere.
