Renaming files whilst in use
« on: February 01, 2006, 12:30:18 pm »

Whenever MC comes across a file that's in use or read only etc during the renaming or tagging process, I end up having to delete it from the library, go into its folder and manually rename it from the .xxxx or .yyyy file it has now become and then reimport. Can't this be made a bit more friendly? eg, tell me the file's in use and cancel the operation?

MC 11.1.106

Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand.

I see a "Media Center encountered errors while tagging and moving files. <snip>" message when I tag a read-only file.

Quote
manually rename it from the .xxxx or .yyyy file
I am not sure i would do that, most times the temp files are not whole (not complete files)

When I Seen The Temp Files Is Only When Another Problem Existed (Like Lack Of Drive Space Or Norton Recycle Bin Was On)

One Thing You Should Look At Is See If You Have The .xxxx Files imported into MC if you do they should not be, and a error ocured once and left a temp file behind and then it was imported.

Well, I don't know what should be happening but whenever I get the message that the file I was just editing was in use, the icon in the library turns to a red x and whatever the file was named has now changed to, for example tune.mp3.yyyy. If I don't rename the file to tune.mp3, I've lost it, it's the only one there.

I can't explain it any better than that, anyone else seen this?

OK, I will try to make sure no files are in use when I edit them.

But, is it expected behaviour for files to be renamed with a .yyyy extension when this happens? If not, what is going wrong?

Help!

i think if you rename a song while it's currently playing you'll get it (as part of a group of songs, not just by itself).

i've done it a couple of times before but i've since stopped playing music when i do my renames - unless i can see everything i'm about to rename and none of them have the play icon next to them.
