Cut music is there a way to?
« on: February 05, 2006, 01:26:59 pm »

I built a computer a while back for a dance studio.  I ripped all their music to the hard drive.  I set them up to use Media center 11.  After trial and error I decided it was best that all teachers log on as a generic account labeled "teachers".  So I created sub folders in the my music folder with each of theirs names.  The teachers all cut/mix music to fit the dance that is being done.  I am having all the teachers save all their cut music to the appropriate folder in my music.  Now on to my question.

When J River imports the music from those folders I want it to list the teacher as the artist of that cut.  So when a person is cutting music is there a way to save the track and specify the artist when saving track:   Just to make it clear what I am saying, here is an example:

I have a teacher named Bill

Bill cuts a song named "Rockin Robin"

Bill saved the song in the "C:\Documents and Settings\teachers\My Documents\My Music\Bill"and saves the song as "Rockin cut"

Currently as it stands, when I import this song in it has no artist info, but I want to save the track with Bill as the artist.  Can this be done in the "save as" screen???  This would be the easiest.  I have tried things like Bill-rockin cut but it thinks that is the title.

I know you can edit theis in media center but I have say 10 teachers and this seems unrealistic (especially with the lack of ability with computer expertise among them).

Any ideas??

Thanks

Have you found the Fill Properties from filename tool?
If you select a track in Media Center and then right click
it is available under Library Tools.

Using this, as long as there is some convention on the way the teachers
name the file, the tool will be able to abstract the information from
the filename, and place it in the library and then update the tags as appropriate.

Go to "Tools -> Library Tools" from the main tool bar or from the right-click menu after highlighting the files of your choice. Both "Fill Properties from Filename" and "Rename Files from Properties" are very useful for quickly organizing and labeling your tracks.

After you've performed these operations once, the naming conventions that you've chosen will be saved as the new defaults, so from then on it will be very simple to repeat the steps of "Fill Properties" and "Rename Files" whenever it's needed to get the desired results.
