OT How good are you with IT?
« on: February 06, 2006, 03:25:44 pm »

http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2006/02/06/bitesize_gcse/

Saw this and it cracked me up.

On the user interface test designed for 15 year olds I got 6/10.
I'm on the final year of a Bsc Computer Science course, and am
doing a unit about Usability Engineering.
It's true that I'm not doing well this year, but I hadn't realised
things had got this bad!  :)

I got 5, and I had wildly guessed on the first 6 questions because I hadn't a clue what they were about.

This probably explains why UK school exam results are showing improvement - a little knowledge and several stabs in the dark will get you a long way  :)

Part of the problem is the way the answers are structured.
Instead of true/false they should be along the lines of
"This is a good reason to use a command line interface"
or
"This is NOT a good reason to use a command line interface"

You scored 8 out of 10 (80%).

I disagree on those two I didn't score:

Quote
3. He doesn't need to run the program alongside other software

3. You said b - False.
Hard luck. If other software does not need to run alongside the program, a command line interface would be the most appropriate.

I have often several CL interfaces and Windows programs running at the same time. The use of a CL interface does not tell what tasks are running and how much multitasking happens.

5. He wants to run the model railway on a low spec computer

5. You said b - False.
Hard luck. Command line interfaces are good if you only have a low spec computer.

The use of a CL interface does not tell how heavy tasks a PC runs. Any low spec computer with e.g. an ancient Pentium 1, Celeron or similar can run old Windows versions and basic 2D graphical interfaces easily.

Though, that guy may have a Commodore 64. In that case I would accept the scores...

1. You said b - False.

Hard luck. If only a few commands are needed, a simple command line interface is all that would be required.

2. You said b - False.

Well done. This is not a reason for using a command line interface.

3. You said a - True.

Well done. This is a good reason for using a command line interface.

4. You said b - False.

Well done. This is not a reason for using a command line interface.

5. You said a - True.

Well done. This is a good reason for using a command line interface.

6. You said b - False.

Well done. This is not a reason for using a command line interface.

7. You said C.

Well done. Graphical user interfaces enable the interface to be customised to suit the user.

8. You said A.

Well done. Cashpoint machines can offer the user a choice of several languages.

9. You said D.

Well done. Special input devices can be used for people with disabilities.

10. You said B.

Well done. Special input devices can be used for people with disabilities.

You scored 9 out of 10 (90%).

I got 9/10 and have absolutely no idea what the topic or any of the questions are about :) They don't teach command line interfaces in medicine...
Lesson: multiple choice tests are easily fooled.

7, I'm happy enough with that considering the application. :)
