The behavior is this:
  1) open media center
  2) select "playing now"
  3) press "play"
  4) song starts playing
  5) Microsoft Bug Report message apears saying the program performed an illegal operation

I can avoid the crash by doing the following between steps 2 and 3:
  2.5) select the previous song in the playlist.

The only thing I can think of that is different now from a few days ago when ot worked fine, is that I recently compressed drive C: in Windows Explorer

yup, no joy.

So you compressed the drive by right-clicking, and select 'Compress drive to save disk space'?

yup.

I have not tried uncompressing the drive yet, because so far this is the only app I am having problems with, and I have a work around, but I could try this if you think it is plausible that the compression is causing the behavior.

Not sure if that is the issue, but I wouldn't compress a complete drive if this is the system drive. generally speaking, it shouldnt cause issues but you never know. Its most likely slow as a dog though.

I would undo it just to make sure, and compress a select amount of folders if you are really in need of space. If you do, make sure there is enough free space before uncompressing.

I assume you've recently checked system data integrity
