DVD Playback Not Workie for Me + a Bug
« on: February 22, 2006, 03:47:17 pm »

First time that I've tried to playback DVD's on my updated rig and have hit a brick wall.  I get video playback on the new combo audio cd's / DVD's, but not audio.  A traditional movie DVD gives me neither audio or video.  The same issues are present in Windows Media Player, versions 9 and 10, but all formats play fine in WinDVD 7.  I'm assuming that the codecs are different but I don't know what I'm missing for MC playback.

Additionally, there's a bug in Options--->DVD Playback Settings--->DVD Configuration---->Audio--->DVD Filter Listing / Decoder Properties.  The messagebox that pops up instructs the user to go to the same dialog, as seen below:

You'll need unrestricted DirectShow compliant filters for DVD playback.  It's possible WinDVD has locks or other silliness that prevents other programs from using their filters.

I have WinDVD 6 and DVD playback works fine from inside MC and inside WiMP.  I too get (and have always gotten) the error message you pictured though.

If WinDVD isn't a good one, and I had massive problems with PowerDVD, what is a good filter I can get?  (BTW I also have Nero 6.)  Can I keep WinDVD installed and get MC to use a different filter? (I know this is a programming nightmare if even possible, but figured I'd ask.)

I do also have ffdshow installed and AC3filter, so that could be why my playback works.  You could try going to Doom9.org and getting those filters (both of which are included in the Gordian Knot Codec Pack if you would rather just grab that -- just don't let it install DivX 5 unless you want to encode things to it - and if so I'd use XviD instead).
