talking of "3 column view" ..... (a trip down memory lane)
« on: February 21, 2006, 03:50:54 am »

This:

How would I reorder things?

good question.  First, I'd say that the most important request is to be able to rearrange things, because different people will have different preferences.

Me, Id have three columns, the one on the left with the tree (like it is now), the one in the middle with the browser (as it is now), and the one on the right with the playing now list, visualizations, file info and the artist info (bio) from the web.  Maybe Id drag the now playing list to the bottom of the middle column....

Yes the bio info is important as marko points out, and though MC wins big points for the AMG linkage, it could be much better integrated.

So you get the now playing, visuals, and file info ON THE SAME SCREEN with everything else without having to click on something in the tree.  Would be cool if you could move, minimize or close all of the elements in any of the tree views.  That way you can minimize an element and then maximize it when you need it without losing it in-between.

The action window sort of works this way now.

Media monkey actually lets you move the songtitle and progress bar element around the screen also, and I think it would be a great idea to have ALL of the elements moveable/changeable like this, though that one in particular I would probably not move.

Here is the default media monkey setup (but you can drag all of the elements around):

here is a screen shot with things moved around differently:

Niether of these are exactly how I would set it up, but they offer some ideas.

Winamp is sort of the ultimate example of this, but IMHO takes it to far and the separate elements arent cohesive enough and dont stick together.

Reminded of Media Center v9.0.180....

my first thoughts after all this time were:

"Arrggh, there's that 'oribble 'media library' again" .... "why can't this be like it is in v.11.1?"

You know what, I played with this for a while, and it worked so very very well it was amazing.
Wow!!, there's a right-click menu on the start page! and it shows the path of a local webpage. Deep joy on two counts, no phoning home/advertising (call it what you will) plus it allows for a custom start page.
This thing did not hit the firewall during my short session. MC9 was nice like that. Sometimes, I prefer a little "distance" from the internet when I'm working at my PC.

"Why can't MC11 be like this?"

As I went through the jarring experience of opening the "import media" dialogue, then again when I switched skins and was, like, "whoa" as MC informed me it would need to restart to do the switch!! I'd forgotten all about that.

"why can't this be like it is in v.11.1"

As I was sure there would be a whole lot more of those conflicts laying under the next mouse-click, I didn't pry much further.

I drew a deep sigh, took my screenshot, and moved quietly onwards.

Aahhh, the price of progress.

Hi Marko,

I miss the possibility to have the "File info" window popping-up and not confined to the action window as it is now. I like to have the tree hidden but, unfortunately, I need to open it often to do some changes in the tags. This is something I really miss.

I avoid the tree at all costs and I think my mindset is not to have (what I consider) clutter.

Being able to max/min panes and drop down windows are okay with me but I would like the functionality suggested in this thread for times when I want to "work" with MC as opposed to "play".

I really hope MC12 will come at development with these two paradigms in mind.

Maybe we can start two threads because more and more I see suggestions made with the two general motives as the impetus for them: "work" and "play"; often they clash.

This is why my suggestion of being able to minimize even the top of MC (in Normal mode) to max screen size is going to freak som people out, BUT the key here is customability. The user give more options (within reason) is a happy user. I think customability is the bridge between the "work/play" modes of MC.
