Post-Upgrade Question
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:01:20 pm »

Just upgraded to 11.1.  Very nice!  Install & registration went smoothly, as did my library restore - mostly.   :)  Looking forward to exploring all the new features!

A few quick, up-front questions though, mainly for the future.

1- Options.

I image and restore my boot drive somewhat regularly, but I can see myself tweaking these setting between imaging.  Where are the options settings stored?  Maybe it was due to my going from 10 -> 11.1 but I had to go in and manually re-do some of my old settings.  Or are they indeed stored within the Library backup?

2- Smartlists/Playlists

They're all there and the correct songs are listed under each, but the displayed columns are somewhat different, and in a different order.  Where are these settings stored?  Or how can I go about defining a set of displayed columns and sort order and have them "stick".

Maybe I created them the wrong way?  For instance, I have a 70s smartlist which has something like Date(year): 1970-1979.  Then I customized the view to sort by year, then month, then Album, then track.  It's the latter view that was lost.

My bottom-line is that I would like to know exactly what Media Center files I have to save in order to be able to maintain all my customization work.

Thank you very much!  Have a great day.

The user options and saved view presets are stored in the Windows registry. You may want to backup the J River registry branches besides the database.

Many internal functions have changed in MC11.1 and some previous configuration settings are not compatible. You just have to recreate those things.

I've just recreated most of my views.

Any chance you could be more specific as far as where to look in the registry?  I'd just like to export the one branch where any view customizations are stored.  Thanks again.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver

There's also a similar entry under HKLM but I wouldn't back that up.  Most of your User Options are stored in the HKCU branch and the HKLM key mostly seems to contain registration data.  As long as you have your serial number information or access to your original email address you can always reregister MC (and even if not I'm sure they'd help you if you came here).

I've had problems with restoring backups of the HKLM key as well causing MC not to run properly (if the hardware has changed for example).

All view schemes are included in the media library (and in a library backup file).

All user options including the saved view presets are in this registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver

Each Windows user has a copy of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch in HKEY_USERS. When a user logs in, the personal copy is synchronized with the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch.

This registry branch contains mostly HW related things and is probably not needed: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver

EDIT: Glynor beat me by 24 seconds...

EDIT 2: He did it again...  :P

Thanks to both of you, regardless of who got in first!  :)

That should do the trick.

Oh... sorry... one more question:  I notice there's a new build available.  Is it safe to assume that I can just download and install/execute it, not worrying about losing all my hard work today to re-customize?  Or should I take the precaution of exporting the registry area(s) even when a minor upgrade is involved.

Thank you all again.

Normaly If you wait about 5 hours if something is put up in the forum and others have found large problems you will see comments in the forum under the recent release. and when there is large problems J River normaly will pull it.

That does not happen often but it happens.

You should always make a backup of the complete \J River\ Folder this will ensure you have a backup of all files.

That's definitely good advice.  Also, if you encounter problems running a new build, you can typically roll back to the previous version to alleviate your problems.

A good standard procedure is to regularly backup your "Library" which is by default where King mentioned (under the C:\Program Files\J River\ directory).  If you've moved your Library location, you'd just want to back that place up.

Generally though, if you wait a few hours and don't see any "It completely trashed my library" or "MC wouldn't start up at all" posts in the build thread, you should be fine.  Generally, the new builds are posted on weekdays at around 6:00pm EST (though they do throw them out at other times just to keep us on our toes).  If you wait until the next morning you should be fine.
