Doesn't it just irritate you...
« on: March 03, 2006, 08:56:13 am »

...when there's a review of MP3 programs and you always see the other big names mentioned but never a mention of Media Center? This program is way better and the support by JRiver here and the community of users is awesome. There just isn't justice in this world.   :(

I was watching Tek TV a while ago.... Someone called in asking about music apps, Leo said that the best one to use, and he paused and couldn't think of the name. He then said to check out Winamp....

On the web, he has a listing of all the questions asked, and he put in as a edit, that he was thinking of MJ/MC,   "The best player that no one remembers" the name Media Center isn't really catchy..... I think the name is the biggest downfall of the software....

Winamp Sucks  ;D

And does Leo really know what he is talking about?

Not really

Besides it was better when it was ZDTV, when it became TechTV And Then G4 it went downhill.

John C. Dvorak was the only one who actually knew the inside story of major events. I think he still works for Ziff Davis.

But it is a cathy name..... Media Center is just to generic, and is very forgettable.... Leo may not know anything, but at that time, he had viewers..... I mentioned him as a example.

There is a lot of programs out there, and in My opinion the ones with a catchy name will always get more hits....

But, what do I know, I am not in marketing or anything.

Remember that we've had some cool names for things in the past. (mini-me, Hairstyle, etc.)  Users on the other side of the fence complained until we changed them.

My personal preference would be to work an animal name into the name somehow.

Nothing wrong with the name at all.

Free shows usually recommend free programs. The only time pay-for programs get recommended is when the show/article is sponsored.

There was a thread earlier where i read JRiver counts 2 million users for it's program. Wow !!

whenever I mention the name to anyone they always ask "Do you mean Windows Media Player?" or simply "Which one?" as if it was not a name but a description.
I get the same thing. Yup, the name is too similar to Media Player.

spooky, but this evening, a friend considering purchasing a Dell system running running Windows XP Media Center Edition phoned to ask my opinion "because that's what you use isn't?"

I sighed, and thought of this thread as I explained the difference :)

One of the biggest problems is that it share the name of Windows Media Center, so when you do a search for anything related to media center in google, that is pretty much what you get, unless you happen to know that it is jriver media center. If you search for media players in general, if you browse, you assume they are talking about MS' product not MC.

Edit: Marko beat me to it.

Dragons can see all and hear all.
But a player with 'Puff' in the name might not be catchy either...

There are a few things to keep in mind with a name. It should be catchy and memorable, bit it is also important in today's world to be highly unique since this helps with searches. Unfortunately MC is none of these. If someone searches for [Media] or
or even [Media Center], they're going to have a tough time finding it. Even if they search for ["Media Center"], quoted as a single term, they're going to have to filter out all of the MS Media Center stuff to find it.

This is one reason a lot of companies either make up words or create combined word (like MediaCenter, a single word that is a combination of 2 real words). These are much more searchable.

Anywho, renaming a product is not something that should be done often, since you loose whatever brand recognition you've created up till them. Having said that, I agree that the current MC name is a weakness for the product.

Maybe JRiver should have an official renaming contest.

From Answer.Com
a·moe·ba also a·me·ba (ə-mē'bə)
n., pl. -bas or -bae (-bē).
Any of various one-celled aquatic or parasitic protozoans of the genus Amoeba or related genera, having no definite form and consisting of a mass of protoplasm containing one or more nuclei surrounded by a flexible outer membrane. It moves by means of pseudopods.

Erm?!

Ok sorry, it was only a joke, but think outside the box.

MC is always changing for the better and can be changed to our liking unlike any other app, hence an amoeba.

I know, I shouldn't have put so much thought into such a lame name. :P

Media River... mmmm I like it...
anyway I think the best for a software is to have only one word. Think in winamp, jetaudio, itunes... more easy to remember...
I suggest MyRiver

I am in my mid 50's and for the life of me i can't understand why anyone would not like or think MC11.1 is the best.

with the amount of files some of the users have that visit this forum the shear amount brings other media players to there knees. i understand that the vass amount of options MC has may be overwhelming to some users, But if i can figure it out anyone can.

Maybe Some Modes:

$25.00 - "I Am A Beginner, Be gentle"
$35.00 - "Average User"
$45.00 - "I Know What I Am Doing"

With the 30 day free trial they can use all 3 modes.

give the user more options beyond the normal for each step they make

I agree King that MC11.1 is the best. My large library brought MJ to its knees which is why I went searching for a newer player that could handle it and MC was the answer. I tried talking my friends into it at the time who were using MJ but all they wanted was audio handling and didn't need everything else. Fortunately documents disappeared so that has helped.

Sorry I started a growing thread but it does frustrate me that people out there don't know about MC and with the similarity of names with other products, probably won't. That said, I like MyRiver.  :)

You mean library manager, instead of player.

I have told ppl about MC but many seem quite happy with winamp + explorer.

..of course we know different ;)

I agree with the name comments.
I really think it is a weak point - it's not really a name as someone pointed out, it sounds more like a description of something than the name of it.

Could either be done subtly with something like
Media Center myMedia or whatever then just slowly start moving the emphasis onto the new word slowly so as to make it more unique or it could be done the exact opposite and totally rename it and use it as a chance to do a huge marketting push to revamp the product and get it a lot of attention as a 'new' product.

Windows did it when they went from: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 then realised the names were getting boring and not standing out enough so went for "Windows Xperience".

Giving it a new name could be a way of saying "this isn't just another version, or a slight progression from an old version, we consider this point the product is at to be a major milestone".

Not "JRiver Media Center 11.1.1468132432432"
but:  JRiver "mediaRiver"
or: "JRiver Evolution"

Do a naming contest - open a thread for name ideas, leave it going for a month. Then do a poll with all the names, whoever came up with the winning name gets a free license and a lifetime's worth of free upgrades.

Just an idea but I definitely agree with the author of this thread.

Well, with all the MC12 feature requests submitted on the forum, it seemed logical to expect that customers would soon feel entitled to rename the software.  Why not rename the company, while you're at it?  Better yet, why not rename JimH?  I'm sure the software would get a lot more publicity if the CEO were named "Mahatma Ghandi" or "Meadowlark Lemon".

I think we should have a contest to rename JimH, and the prize could be . . .howabout an internship with JimH (future name pending) at the jriver world headquarters?  You know, like they do with Donald Trump on "The Apprentice"?  I think there's a pitch there. . . .

Just my $.02, FWIW.
