Duplicate podcast downloads
« on: March 08, 2006, 07:48:52 pm »

I have not tested this in 141, but with 140 I noticed that I started getting double downloads of podcasts.

NPR: Tech for Mar. 1
Engadget for Mar. 7

both downloaded twice and show up in MC twice.

This could be an issue with the feeds, and will see if it cont. with 141

I saw the same thing on Engadget.  When I investigated I found they had changed the Episode URLs from:

http://www.engadget.com   (to)
http://Podcast.engadget.com

Since we use the Episode URL as a globally unique identifier, we saw most of the episodes in the feed as different after the change, so we downloaded the new ones.

If you had the same problem,  you will find that the duplicates have different URLs from the originals in this way.

I'm still wondering if this will happen often enough to be a problem....

There is a GUID in the podast feed which is alegedly globally unique, and could be used the same way, but lots of Podcasts don't have them, and they are not required.  I didn't want to clutter (i.e. enlarge) the database with these, although it looks like it would have solved the problem in this case.

I am not subscribed to NPR Technology so I can't tell you if that is the same thing.

Would you check and see if this is the problem?

thanks,
