converting m4a to flac

Trying to convert m4a to flac - i can play both (have plugins installed) but when i try to convert i get the mysterious "directshow" filters error - I have standard QT installed with itunes - is there something i am missing? Is this actually possible?

In order to convert from m4a format, you must have filters installed for DirectShow playback of m4a.

There are a number of options in terms of filter installation. "FFDShow" and "MP4 Splitter" are a good combination. Do a search on this forum about "DirectShow m4a", or "FFDShow Mp4 Splitter" for more info, or check this thread:
