Hi Team,

I have been using MC10 for ages now and have configured the media server on port 8082 and the remote server on port 8081. This all worked great with netremote access and the server library functions to stream the music to my study machine.

I upgraded to MC 11.1 to get the podcast stuff, The remote server with netremote still works but the media server does not. I get the message 'Filed to find local Media Server'. There are not firewalls in the way and windows firewall is off. Also I can't get the media server icon to give me the option to see the log, when I click on it just 'Show media center and close media server' appear.

I have a web server running on port 80 so I want to change the port of the media server but can't get the gui to come up.
The server does not work with the web server shutdown either

Help!!!!

Are both sides the same version?

Media Server itself is just a shell program that runs a very small footprint of MC. The actual server is called Library Server and you will find in the three under "Devices and Plug-ins". See options there.

I had started media server but not library server. I take it media server gets it's port settings from library server but will service remote MC's without MC running on the host server.

Aren't this two different apps with different port settings? They will conflict if using the same port. You don't need Library server to run Media server and they should be different ports...correct?

Media Server is a shell for the MC servers. It runs whatever you have set in MC. The files are served by the Library Server plug-in. Media Server just starts it.

And if the Library Server is not actually started in its options it remains in that state.

The Media Server icon that shows up in the Taskbar notification area has the right-click menu option "Show Media Center" for opening the full MC GUI and accessing the Library Server options.

was under the assumption that Library Server was seperate so I have a certain port forwarded for it and another for Media Server. When Media Server starts it uses the library server plugin but which port does it use? The one set under Options>Run Media Server on port xxxx ?

They need to run on seperate ports correct?

If you mean the server in Tools > Options > Start Up, that is not Media Server. Please check the name again. I have explained it in this thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28560.0

Library Server uses the port that is set in the plugin options.

"Media Server" is just a way to run Media Center that has a smaller footprint and runs in the background til you need the user interface. If you have any of the sharing plug-ins enabled, those will be running while Media Center is running in Media Server mode.

So: Media Server does NOT use any ports, and does NOT need any ports forwarded. Library Server, TiVo Server, and the UPnP server WILL use ports if they are running.

You do not need separate ports for Library Server in Media Center, and Library Server in Media Server mode of Media Center. They are the same thing. The only difference is that Media Server tries to reduce the footprint when it is not visible, no other differences.

Does this make more sense?

Actually, I think the name "Media Server" is a bit confusing since it meant a separate server previously.

A better name would be something like "Server Enabler".

The name is confusing and I ask because I crash MC when the ports are the same for Media Server & Library Server.

The way I start Media Server is from within MC since I don't have any type of shortcut.

Still not clear on why there is a field to enter a custom port for Media Server when it is supposed to use the Library Server port from the plugin section.

The crash was leading me to believe they were two different Servers.

There are NO ports for Media Server.

Are you talking about Remote Server?

Exactly where are you setting this port?

Yeah I was simply confused and assuming too much I guess. I thought that the Media Server was the Remote Server hence my questions as to why the heck we needed port routing for Library Server and Media Server.

thanks for clearing this up; renaming could be helpful.

So essentially the Media Server is offering Library and Remote server functions when MC is closed and it uses the Lib. Server port.

You got it almost right, except that Remote Server has nothing to do with the server plugins or Media Server.

Remote Server is a web server that provides a simplified MC interface in HTML format. The interface can be accessed with any web browser.

From the MC help:

Remote Server starts a Web Server that can be used to control Media Center from another device running a web browser.

Example

Media Center is playing on your home stereo in the living room. You are working on your laptop or your Pocket PC in the kitchen, and decide you want to listen to a different playlist, increase the volume, or skip to the next track. You do not have to go to the living room computer; you can control playback from your laptop via the Web.

To enable Remote Server:

1. On the main Media Center computer, go to Tools > Options > Startup > Run Remote Server.

2. The default port is set to 80. Click on the entry to change it.

To access Media Center from another computer, open a web browser and type http://yourMediaCenterPCsName:theAssignedPortNumber

Remote Server is not password protected.

How does Remote Server differ from Library Server?

Remote Server allows you to control the playback on the Media Center computer via the web.

Library Server allows you to playback the Media Center computer's library on a different computer.

However, you are correct in that Media Server keeps the Remote Server alive too. I just tried it for the first time.
