need help with vocabulary and concepts
« on: March 26, 2006, 06:05:23 pm »

I have been trying out Media Center 11 and really like it.  I've already been able to do some customizing but I don't understand the vocabulary the program uses and the program's underlying concepts.

--- saving the current view
After I get the fields I want displayed in the pane portion and in the file list and the sort order as I want it in the "Customize Current View" dialog, I click on the "Save this View" button.  A drop down list with three choices appears: "Save for this Location", "Save for all Similar locations under this scheme" and "Save for all Similar locations".

I don't understand what a location is and which choice would fit my needs.  I also don't understand where views I define will show up.

---- Panes
I notice that when I right click on the Panes line, I am offered a single menu choice "Edit View Scheme".  I can add columns and rearrange columns but the "Step 2: name scheme" partt of the dialog doesn't work.

---- view schemes and libraries
I'd like to have one set of columns displayed for classical music and one for other music.  I'd like to specify one or the other kind of music and only see those music files for the kind of music I selected.

Maybe I can accomplish this with a view scheme for each kind of music.  Maybe there are macros or functions I can use to exclude or format the display based on tags and other database fields.

Maybe I could just have a separate audio library for each kind of music.

----- audio, images and performance
I will 15,000+ music files in my library.  MC 11 looks useful for digital camera images too.  I've got lots of those too and making more alll the time.  I'm concerned about how MC11 will perform with 100,000 files in one library.

I'm be happy to hear from other users about how MC1 performs with large libraries and good strategies for using it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

well i have over 150,000 in one library and have another 350,000 in other libraries

With 4 terabytes

MC beats all Jukeboxes (I tried them all) when handling large libraries

you may need a faster computer the larger you go, and the library should be on a fast drive, having more memory does not hurt.

Since I made A few plug-ins "Lyrics" and other finder plug-ins J river found a way to brake the data base down so it all does not load all the info into the system using even more memory.

Thanks for the info on large libraries.

I'm still hoping to get an explanation of "saving for this location" for a view scheme.  It appears to change the other view schemes for the same type of files (audio.)

I wouldn't get too hung up on the 'save for this location' stuff, as in the latest beta releases (available from the thread at the top of this forum) those options have been binned due to their confusing nature, and look likely to stay that way.

Re. Panes:

to set a custom name, you must first untick "auto-name"
Note: You cannot rename the stock 'audio, image and video' viewschemes

Re. Viewschemes: (assuming you'd like regular audio, with a classical 'child' viewscheme)

Right click on audio in the tree and choose 'edit viewscheme'
Set your panes the way you'd like for regular audio.
In 'step 4' type (without the quotes) "-g=classical
click OK
None of your classical tracks will show up now when you click on audio.

Next..

Right click on audio again, and this time choose 'add viewscheme'
pick panes you desire for your classical tracks.
untick 'auto-name' and name it classical
make sure 'honour parent scheme search strings' is unticked
in step 4, type (without quotes) "[media type]=audio g=classical"

this viewscheme will only show tracks whose genre is classical

For both of the above, use the 'customise current view' dialogue to choose which columns you'd like to see in the file list, and also to set any desired sorting.

Re. Viewschemes (perhaps you'd like to have a "Classical" viewscheme on the root of your tree?)

Click on "playing now" in the tree, and then go to the toolbar at the top of MC. Click on Edit, then on 'add viewscheme'

The now familiar viewscheme dialogue will open. Set it up using the instructions for the classical child above, and when your done, you should have a classical entry just below audio in your tree.

enjoy :)

Marko, Thanks for the suggestions for genre-specific view schemes.  I have built a couple of schemes already.  They showed up in the web interface which is a great way to customize that interface.

Part of my requirement is to operate MC 11 from a laptop in a different room.  So I'm looking at the remote server (web interface).  I haven't found documentation with any depth so I'd like to get some leads to documentation on the MC 11 web interface?

Or other ways to operate MC 11 from another room.  (I know that I could take over the PC's interface entirely which is OK if the PC running MC 11 is totallt dedicated to playing music.  Not so good if that PC is used for other things as well.)
