Matt: Problems again if more than 2 GB of thumbnails??
« on: March 31, 2006, 02:44:28 pm »

Matt,

Back in build 107 you fixed a problem with this issue:

--------------------------------------------
11.1.107 (01/26/05)

3. Fixed: Having more than 2 GB of thumbnails could still cause issues in some cases.
--------------------------------------------

Could it be that with the thumbnails enhancements introduced in the last builds the problem has reproduced??

I'm using build 159. Yesterday night I rebuilt all my thumbnails. My thumbnails folder is now slightly over 2 GB and consists of 3 subfolders, one with 2,01 GB and the other two with circa 8 MB each.

The problem that I'm experiencing is that all the cover art that I'm adding today is showing OK inside MC but does not show up in third party plug-ins such as Rhino's Playing Now.

I just did a test with an old file that displayed OK:  Removed the cover, pasted it again...  and it doesn't show up now.

Could this be related to the problem fixed in build 107? Any suggestion?

Thanks for your time.

Maybe if you could email me your 2GB thumbnail file. (kidding)

It's strange that MC can show the images. Is there any area of MC having issues (Action Window, Visualizations, etc.), or is it only third-party SDK access?

Thanks.

I think we found it.  Please try again next build.

Hey that was fast!! Thank you  :)

It seems only to be related to third party SDK access. It shows OK in action window, visualizations and also in library views.

Will try next build and let you know.

Thanks again.

Is there supposed to be one thumbnail per album or one per track ?

MC doesn't have separate album items in the database. An item that can be seen as an album is actually constructed virtually from track files information by using certain rules. Also, the cover art system is based on track image files, not on album or folder images.

Logically, MC should use only one thumbnail for each actual image link, so duplicate thumbnails could be avoided. That would work for linked cover art images if a proper mechanism would be present. However, embedded images would still be a problem because in that case each album track file contains a physically separate and a possibly different embedded image.

I suppose this is the main reason why MC creates a thumbnail for each separate track file. MC uses a straightforward system and attaches a new thumbnail to each database file that contains cover art (linked or embedded).

Personally, I try to avoid rebuilding all thumbnails if I need to recreate them. Instead, I just scroll through the audio album view manually. Then MC creates a thumbnail only for the first audio file in the in the album folder on the need basis. I guess I have currently about 2500 audio file thumbnails instead of about 30000. I scroll separately the image and video categories for creating those thumbnails.
