Something Screwy Going On Burning Data CDs
« on: August 15, 2006, 03:09:01 pm »

So here's what I did...

I set up a Virtual Handheld called "MP3 CD Burn" that I wanted to use when burning MP3 CDs to listen to in the car. I tried to set its conversion to MP3, but with that particular build, MC couldn't download the MP3 encoder, so I wound up setting it to WMA just so I could burn this particular CD.

So anyway, I dragged a bunch of albums to the "handheld". Included were two AC/DC albums, Who Made Who, and Back In Black.

Everything with the handheld seemed to go fine (although I'm at work right now and can't check to make sure - but I will when I get home).

I then told MC to burn a CD, chose Data CD, gave it a name, checked Close Disc, etc. Then I dragged the files from the "handheld" to the CD. I then told MC to burn the CD. I chose an album naming scheme of Artist\Album and a file naming scheme of Track # - Name

The resulting CD is a mess. Well, more accurately, the AC/DC albums are a mess. First of all, the files are all over the place, not just in their proper folders. And then secondly, almost all of the files are just the wrong name. The file itself is the proper file, with all the correct tag data, but the filename is wrong.

The resulting structure is this:

CDRoot
|_
|  AC_DC
|  |_
|  |  Back In Black
|  |  |_
|  |     02 - Shoot To Thrill.wma (Actually "Back In Black")

Any ideas what happened? I noticed something similar when I tried to burn an MP3 CD (back when I could actually convert to MP3). Only that time it was a Rammstein album. I don't have the CD here ATM, or I'd post a detailed list of what happened. I can tell you that for that CD, I didn't do the "handheld" step as I did with this one. It was a straight shot from my library to a data CD, doing an MP3 conversion. All of the files I've mentioned above (and for Rammstein) are APL files that are all tagged and play properly. And all of my files follow the Artist - Name convention.

Ok, so here's what happened with the Rammstein CD that I mentioned.

I didn't do the virtual handheld step on this one. I just went straight from my library to the disc, with MC set to convert to MP3.

Here's the result:

CDRoot
|_
|  Rammstein
|  |_
|     Sehnsucht
|     |_
|        01 - Sehnsucht.mp3 (Actually "Du Hast")
|        01 - Sehnsucht_1.mp3 (Actually "Alter Mann")
|        06 - Bück Dich.mp3 (Actually "Eifersucht")
|        06 - Bück Dich_1.mp3 (Actually "Sehnsucht")
|        07 - Spiel Mit Mir.mp3 (Actually "Tier")
|        07 - Spiel Mit Mir_1.mp3 (Actually "Küss Mich (Fellfrosch)")
|        07 - Spiel Mit Mir_2.mp3 (Actually "Bück Dich")
|        07 - Spiel Mit Mir_3.mp3
|        09 - Alter Mann.mp3 (Actually "Bestrafe Mich (English)")
|        11 - Küss Mich (Fellfrosch).mp3 (Actually "Engel")
|
|_
   02 - Engel.mp3 (Actually "Du Hast (English)")
   06 - Bück Dich.mp3 (Actually "Bestrafe Mich")
   10 - Eifersucht.mp3 (Actually "Klavier")

And actually, this whole experiment kind of generated a feature request for me...

When burning CD's, whether Audio or Data, would it be possible for MC to intelligently replace characters such as ü with their less fancy equivalent, u? These types of characters cause all kinds of havoc with the display on my car CD player.

Not sure if the handhelds out there have this same problem or not.
