« on: September 09, 2002, 01:20:06 pm »

anyone any thoughts on the new Lossless WMA vs APE? I've ripped a few tracks both ways and can't hear much difference - anyone else any thoughts

Matt - no offence mate - I remain a truly loyal MJ/APE man!!

You won't hear a difference -- they're both lossless.

But I'm not sure I'd archive / store my music with a proprietary, closed-source, DRM laiden format...

Is it even possible to decompress those files back to the original WAV's?

Matt - Good Call... ("proprietary, closed-source, DRM laiden format... Is it even possible to decompress those files back to the original WAV's?"

I noticed that several tracks show higher bit rates with WMA and was curious. I am only just getting my head round lossless (so quality nirvana means APE via ASIO via SPDIF to my HiFi DAC with 100% of what I ripped being played back - roll on MJ9!)

Did you notice the wording MS uses?  "....mathematically lossless..."  Is that double-speak or the real deal?  I plan on doing some sound comparisons tonight...

How do filesizes compare?

Not that I'm contemplating switching or anything. I don't like the idea that MS could just decide that I can't listen to my music anymore.
