Major problem post WMP9 install - Unable to play Ripped tracks
« on: September 09, 2002, 12:19:20 pm »

I posted an earlier message - I have a little more info.

Following the installation of Windows XP SP1 and then WMP 9.0 I have been unable to play back any of the tracks (WMA) I ripped to disk. MJ play one or two tracks and then display an error message "player - unable to aquire license", and then crashes with application error.

I have tried doing a system restore prior to SP1 and WMA 9 install however problem still exists.

I do seem to be able to play back CDs direct without a problem. However, even if I delete the tracks and recreate them (WMA format) the same problem exists.

Any help in getting me back to a working MJ is VERY WELCOME !

Try turning off "personal security" in WMP.

Is it possible that even with backing out everything, there is still a file somewhere that might have the setting enabled ?

Any hack available without having to install the beta copy again ?

I have just ripped a CD with MP3 format and I seem to be able to playback these tracks without a problem - does this help ?

I wonder if it's the way you're ripping (settings).  We have tested (a little) with wma here and both version 8 and version 9 of MJ will work.

All I can suggest is trying another codec.

OK, looks like I lost the license when I updated my system from W98 to XP recently. I got the following message when I tried to play the file with Windows Media Player 9.

"A license cannot be found for this media file. Use License Management to transfer a license for this file from the original computer, or acquire a new license."

All the tracks were ripped with MJ. I have ripped some MP3 files, and these seem OK (see seperate post). so it looks like something has "corrupted" the WMA files
