OT: Widows to Linux backup - problem with filenames
« on: December 18, 2006, 01:07:17 pm »

I just switched to a linux based NAS (D-link DNS-323) for my library.
Transferred all the files - most of them got transferred ok but some of them didn't - they worked fine under windows but linux cannot interpret the filenames correctly.
I have quite a few files with tags and filenames in cyrillic - those work ok.
Some of the files have some irregular characters - polish, hungarian, german - some of them are easy to find and edit but some of them look as normal characters but in fact are from the bottom of the code page - 'i' could be the polish 'l'-crossed - ł
' can be ´
etc..
These problem files get truncated at the problem characters..
(I actually tried to copy-paste some of the problem filenames into MS Word and found that just one or two characters in the file name might be from a non-stanard code page - the rest is english)
Is there any way to mass-edit the filenames - remove all unicode stuff from there?
?

talking to myself again..
the unit went back to amazon.
d-link just released this product and i guess they need to work on their firmware/software a little. many people complain about data loss and filename-changing..
