Trouble Opening URLs
« on: January 16, 2007, 05:38:22 pm »

I have build 147 and opening some URLs does not work. I use Firefox 2.x. When I click the link, MC opens and nothing happens. I have to copy/paste the URL from the web page to MC. When I copy the URL to the clipboard and paste in the Open URL dialog, I receive an error which says...

Windows Media Error:
The specified protocol is not recognized. Be sure that the file name and syntax, such as slashes, are correct for the protocol.

Here is one URL I'm trying.
http://www.king5.com/sharedcontent/VideoPlayer/makeASX.php?title=www.king5.com/kiraw_011607portlandhomevid.wmv

The URL opens in WMP without a problem.

We analyzed this stream and it looks like it has an incorrect MIME type in the header. Essentially the header is saying it's an asf file, but it's actually an asx list. It appears to be a sloppily constructed header that Window Media Player just happens for be able to decipher, but MC, as well as WinAmp, does not.

We can't change MC to handle this one case without risking breaking it for properly constructed headers. You could complain to the website operator and maybe get them to fix their mime content type.

UPDATE: We found a clean fix for this after all (in the next build).

You may have to delete the entry out of MC first so it will analyze the URL again.

Fixed? Thank you! It's not the first time I've experienced the problem. Hopefully they'll all disappear.
