Importing rating from APE tags
« on: March 26, 2007, 02:55:45 pm »

I have invested a significant amount of time rating songs.  I have not found any information on how I can update Media Center 12 from the Monkey Audio tags with the information.  Any recommendations?   ?

Under MC's Tools/Library Tools, try Update Library from Tags.  Try a few before you do very many.

That was the first thing I tried.  The tag calls it a preference whereas MC 12 calls it a rating.  I wonder if their is a failure to map preference to rating when importing the files.

Under Library Tools again, there is a move/copy option.  It can copy from one field to another.

I just looked at this procedure.  It appears to work when you copy one field to another in MC 12's database.  I am trying to get the information from the file tag.  I do not see an option that allows me to access the tag fields. ?

You can add a tag to MC if you know its name.

Mc 12 sees most of the fields in the Ape tag.  The only problem I see is mapping the field performance in the ape tag to rating in MC 12.  The other question is do I need to convert my existing tags from APE format to another.  Will that solve the problem?

What program did you use to save the rating in the APE tag?

Do you know what field name it used?

I used EAC to rip and Monkey Audio to encode the files.  I updated the tags within DB Power amp.  As I see it, the problem is the field name in the APE tag "preference" vs "rating" used in MC 12.  If there is a way to map this field from the tag or update the tag field name then it should work.

BTW I reviewed the tag closely.  MC creats a field in the tag called "rating".  The original file has the field called "preference" where the information is stored as a numeric.

Did you try adding a tag with the name "preference" to MC?

We'll add support for "Preference" when reading APEv2 tags.

The monkey that made the APE tag spec didn't tightly spec out how to store rating.

Just to be sure, you're using a digit from 1 to 5 in "Preference"?

Thanks.

Yes, I created a field called preference and tried to update from the tags.  Still no success.

Actually, Monkey Audio records this field in a decimal format or half stars.  So you could rate a song at 4.5 stars and it stores the information as 4.5 and displays it with up to 5 stars with a minimum of .5, no zero stars.

Thanks for all your help!

Matt:

Being a newbie here, what is the process that you go through to do an update?  Will we be notified when a fix is in or do we just keep checking for updates?

The current build is always posted in a "sticky" thread at the top of this board.  The thread subject will always be something like: "Media Center 12.0.XXX".  The download location for the installer for the current build is always included.  You can simply download the installer and install over-top of your current installation.  There's no need to uninstall your existing version first (and generally you don't want to).

Generally a new build will be posted once per week (sometimes 10 days).  The auto-update function from inside the application doesn't always grab the newest version (sometimes they delay that by a little bit to make sure everything is stable before they give it out en masse).  The most reliable way to always get the newest version is to come here and check at the top of the forum.
