MC / Vista problem setting up FLV playback
« on: March 31, 2007, 02:47:21 pm »

Earlier today, I installed MC 12.0.198 on a new Vista installation. I downloaded a YouTube video and tried to play it back, and I got the message about "downloading components" or something. I knew it was OK because I installed MC on my XP machine so I'd been through this before. While this message was on screen I got an alert from User Account Control about MC trying to download. I Allowed it but just then MC crashed. Since then when I try to play back the video, the "downloading..." message comes on for a second before MC crashes.

I haven't installed any third party plug-ins yet and this is the first app to crash in Vista yet, so does anyone know what I can do?

Thank to anyone who can help out.

Try download and manually install the filters suggested here:

I am guessing maybe Vista was preventing MC from installing/registering/configuring the needed filters.

I downloaded VLC player and played some FLVs and all I got was audio with a white screen. So I figured it must be a systemwide issue with flvs. But then I installed a free FLV Player and it played the same video fine.

I've changed the settings in ffdshow like was mentioned in that thread but still MC won't play the files. It says the "downloading components" thing and then either just skips to the next mpg file or just crashes.

It's a real shame since that was my favourite new feature of MC12.

Did you do what Yaobing suggests above?  It should fix the problem.

Besides configuring FFDShow, you need to download and register FLV Splitter. The link and procedure are in the FAQ I linked above.
