Unable to start MC
« on: June 26, 2007, 01:11:16 pm »

Since the last 2 builds of MC I'm unable to start MC. Only the first start after the installation works. The second trie does take no effect. The third (and every following) try lets the window "Incomplete Shutdown Detection" apear. Doesn't matter what I select, MC doesn't start. If I check every box, Vista shows it error message where I can chose to close the program or look online for a solution. If I only check "Use default window size, position, and skin" the MC-Information window appears. After clicking Ok, nothing happens.

A new installation let the thing start again. Only a downgrade to 251 helps. With 259 I had the same problem.

Could you post the tail of an MC log after the crash? (Help > Logging...)

I'm guessing the option Startup > Last Location is causing a problem.  Does it matter what you're looking at when closing the program?

I tried to play around with the "last location" setting. Tried out every single setting available there, but nothing changed. I paste the end of the logfile below (The whole file was longer than 8000 characters).

Did some other tests:
checking the box "Run installed programm now" after finishing the installation always works. But if I wait to long clicking "Ready", MC doesn't start. (I couldn't confirm this) Also if I unchecked it and did a restart of my PC, MC didn't start.

That log is from an instance that was running like 13 minutes.

I'm hoping to see a log that shows the crash, which I'm guessing would be just a few seconds long.

Thanks!

Sorry for that. I did some crashes, than re-installed MC, chose "previous log" and pasted it. Don't know how this could happen.

I'll do a second try. Start MC -> Uncheck all boxes in "Incomplet shutdown Detection" window, click OK in the following Information box. Nothing happens. Even the Windows Vista error window doesn't appear. I do a reinstall, start MC, chose "previous log". It's the same log I had before. What am I doing wrong?? The "current log" looks like this, does this help?

Now I have to end MC via task manager after windows error message disapears. Everything else is the same. Everthing works fine with my Laptop.

Is there any chance to get support? Can I do something else to make support possible?

I don't know the issue.  This isn't a common problem.

It's worth trying to uninstall, disconnect devices, reboot and reinstall.

The log you posted doesn't seem like a crash log.  If you erase the old logs, you can see if MC is writing a new one.  They're in C:\Documents & Settings\[User]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12.

They're in C:\Documents & Settings\[User]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12.

Don't have this path. Did a search. For Vista its "C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 12"

Anyway: thanks for this hint. I was able to get a log file of the crash. It's short (as you expected), so I can post the whole one.

The log file only is created when the windows error message doesn't appear. And it always ends up with "Loading global settings".

Some ideas what I can do? I would try a complet uninstall and reinstall, but the first start after install always works fine and I have no problems running MC till I shut it down and try to start it up again. I don't want to loose all my settings. But if you think it could help, I'll do a backup and try it out tomorrow. Let me know, what you think. Just to remeber: 12.0.251 works fine.

This is support.

Yes, now it is. But nobody told me, that my second log-file also was no crash log. I thought it was, so I did a second request. I didn't wanna be impatiently, sorry if it looked like this.

We've never seen this before.

However, a few things:

The log indicates build 251.  Try the latest.

The "Pre-logging time" is almost six seconds, which is really strange.  That should be almost zero.  Check for other processes running on the system in Task Manager.

Finally, a reinstall is a good idea because it's doing something very simple when it crashes.  It's talking to JRTools.dll, and no other threads have started yet.

Right around there it's trying to load:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12\Properties\Sorting - ***

This should never be a problem.

However, you could rename "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12" to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12 (rename)" using regedit to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the hints. I'll try what you suggest. It'll take a little time, I'm not at home at the moment. I've no big background tasks running apart from the thousends of vista services, some driver utilities (Logitech, NVidia, CMedia) and BitDefender. But I'll check it up again.

The log indicates build 251.  Try the latest.

I cannot understand this... I installed 267 serveral times because, as I said, MC only starts one time after the installation progress. I'll take a look at this. Perhaps I've some things write protected or some old links... I'll see.

Thanks for help. I'll let you know if something takes an effect.

You may have two copies installed and running the wrong one sometimes.

This idea came to me too because the whole thing could be explained (working MC started by Installer/not working started by me (via link)). When I'm back at home (unfortunately not before tommorow) I'll check this FIRST.

Would be cool, because then it's easy to make MC work again (just select right installation  ::)),
would be bad, because it's a realy stupid mistake  :-[

I got it. Some registry entries where pointing to an external drive dir where an older version of MC (251) was installed. I don't know how it could happen, because I never installed or used it with this PC. Only with my old machine I used this installation. Changing all registry entries to the right location solved the problem.

Curious, but not worth thinking of it. Perhaps I had a mistake when I imported my MC-settings via backuptool ... who knows.

Thanks for spending some of your time for my problem!
