Convert File Format (use alternate fields)
« on: August 31, 2007, 08:34:27 am »

Convert File Format only allows one field for Artist. We should be able to use what would result in more accurate/appropriate folder naming structure given the ability to use Album Artist, Album Artist (auto), or another custom Artist field. Technically not a bug, but it really bugs me. I and others utilize the Artist field to retain unique incarnations of artists/bands, misspellings, and duets. Trying to create a lossy version of your lossless collection results in excessive folders which mirror these notes "Artist" uses.

I moved out here to reply and discuss further.

"There are fields for that: keywords, comments, notes, etc.  You may be better off keeping information like that in another field.  I know the default for CD info is to put it in the artist and that's okay because most users don't want extra fields...however, they are there for a reason.  I, personally, tend to put information like that in the Name and just put less of it in anyway because it messes things up.  I like everything as clean, short, and simple as possible.

For the allow fields to be cut for long values...I think the overall maximum length should be allowed as long as the size of MC is large enough.  Right now, I have quite a bit of free space on the right (I don't show filenames, etc.) yet lots of Names are cut off even with all the extra space.
"

I agree there are other fields. That's why I use Album Artist, Album Artist (auto), and a custom field Album Artist (Custom). I think it's counter to the idea of simple to put Artist info into a Name field.  I want the name of the song in Name; straightforward and simple (no parenthesis etc.)

There is great variation, especially in Jamaican music of spellings and incarnations of groups and artists. Having explored the system of Artist, Album Artist, and Album Artist (auto) I decided it would be best to use a new field for reasons I can link to, but for brevity's sake will not get into now.

So I actually agree with you that there are other fields for this, specifically Album Artist and similar fields which are more of a meta-Artist field than anything else. My system uses an extra step, a custom field, but in the end my Album Artist (Custom) tile browsing experience excludes esoteric artists and at the same time includes all those tracks that get "stuck" in the Multiple Artist tile due to their being tagged Album Artist (Auto) = (Multiple Artists). I feel this system works very, very well.

In my sig for example I can retain use of Artist field to have accurate, concise, and ordered display of the players on the song.
