ID3 Tags - Genre Question
« on: September 25, 2007, 04:52:48 pm »

Hey guys I am going through my collection and adding genres. The thing is there are 100s of genres, erally, but I want to narrow it down to where everything on my playlist fits somewhat comfortably into one of about oh, 15? maybe 20?

I was looking for some help in coming up with a well-rounded set that covers all music, but not so picky that i've got genres with only a few albums each.

Here's what I am thinking. Please let me know if you can think of some good additions or how to restructure.

Christmas
Classical
Comedy
Country
Dance
Jazz
Metal
Pop
Classic Rock
Modern Rock
Punk Rock
R&B
Rap
Trance

What about Blues? Should I just lump that in with Jazz? I think I'd have a hard time telling them apart in many cases. I'm not a huge jazz or blues listener. Also not exactly sure as what qualifies as Dance as opposed to Trance. Should these be merged into a single category? If so, called what? Also, not really sure where some important subgenres fall (electronic, blues, new age, etc) Which of these if any should get their own category and where would they fall otherwise?

Thanks so much, and I know every collection is different but hopefully I can get some good advice here.

Care to explain the subtle differences then? I know there's a lot that can go either way. When in doubt, stick it in blues because I'll probably have a lot more (and different kinds) of jazz?

I Said Don't do it, Because I like Jazz, But Hate Blues

Blues:

My Baby Went And Left Me, My Car Broke Down, My Dog Took A Dump In My Shoes, My Body Parts Are Falling Off, And I Got VD

Besides I Just Wanted To Say Don't Do It....

I would:

Keep Blues and Jazz separate (very easy to distinguish when you become familiar).

Merge Pop, Dance, R&B into Pop because 1960's pop was Frank Sinatra, 2000's pop is R&B - pop is just whatever is mainstream popular at any given time - you want your genres to have longevity - I make a distinction for Rap because it is quite distinct spoken word.

Merge Metal, Punk Rock, Classic Rock, and Modern Rock into Rock - same reason, today's modern rock will be tomorrow's classic rock.

I often find it difficult to distinguish between Rock and Pop. Rather than sweat the difference I created a view for all Rock & Pop and therefore do not have to worry if I categorized something wrong.

I find the following music genres to be distinct enough to easily distinguish so you might want to consider adding:
Soundtrack
Bluegrass
Cajun
Celtic
Children
Electronica
Folk
Gospel
Latin
Opera
Reggae
Soul
World

Looking forward to the day when you use MC to manage other types of media you might consider:
Book (text and audio books)
Movie
Radio Play
Magic
Speech (speeches by famous people)
Podcast
Sound Effects

One trick I use to avoid expanding the genre list is to use a second dimension in the tag "Keyword". So for example, I use keywords to categorize my books as fiction, non-fiction, etc.
