On our main HTPC, for some very strange reason the video just suddenly started getting squished.  I was not watching video when it happened but the viewers say it was playing fine and then suddenly it sort of blipped and now the video is a tiny strip across the screen...maybe taking 50% of the height overall (~4:3 monitor).  When I adjust the aspect ratio it zooms to fill more of the screen but stays squished.  The video is actually being distorted and squished.

Sounds like a video card driver bug. Try fiddling with the video card settings and/or updating the drivers. My Nvidia 7600 used to sometimes "forget" it's overscan settings.
