End of tracks being cut off
« on: August 12, 2002, 11:17:32 pm »

Hi there,

Slight problem running 8.0.347 (has been around for a while). We use auto-playlists, containing a mixture of music and Simpsons quotes in MP3 format (helps pass the day...).

The problem is, the end of the Simpsons quotes ALWAYS get cut off. All other players are fine, it's just MJ. Playback settings are: Between tracks, Standard; Gap: 2s; Seeking: Standard; Stop: Immediate.

If we play a quote on its own, it's fine, and finishes normally. If we have a quote followed by something else, the last ~0.5s ALWAYS gets cut off, no matter what playback options we have. The next song starts buffering about 9 seconds before the quote finishes, and kicks in *just* before the first one finishes, cutting it off mid-word. I mean, this probably happens going from song to song, you just notice it more with the quotes.

So, can we either: fix this problem, or have a way turn off buffering completely (hey, it might help...).

I can send sample MP3s if this will help.

Also, a way to change from regular to alternate playback mode without having to leave something heavy leaning on the ALT key would be nice (some kind of switch)

Thanks,
Paul

I used to have short .wav files cut off if they were mono instead of stereo.  You might check how the quote .mp3's are encoded.  When you say, "this probably happens going from song to song, you just notice it more with the quotes", I don't think so.  Now that my short files are stereo .mp3's, they mix in perfectly.

My settings are: Between Tracks - Gapless, Seeking - Smooth (normal), Stop - Fadeout (normal).

Since I am using Gapless and you are using a 2 sec gap, my configuration is more demanding of buffer handling, and it works correctly.  So I think it may be in your quote files.

Or it may just be because I'm a Packer fan.

I'm only guessing at this, but try it out.

In playback options, go to the "Output" section and click on "Settings". Move the slider away from "More Skip Resistant" and closer to "More Responsive".

I think this may reduce the buffer size and allow your short tracks to complete playing before the next track begins to load up the buffer.

Like I said, only guessing.  If it doesn't work, just set it back the way it was.

Hey guys, thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, the mp3s in question ARE stereo, and the "more responsive" option doesn't help. D'oh.

Ahh well, hopefully the legends at JRiver will be able to work it out. :)
