OT-Does Anyone Have This Toolbar?
« on: August 10, 2002, 07:29:50 am »

Bought a magazine the other day, PC Upgrade, and in the downloads section there was an address for 'Dave's Quick Search Deskbar'. Installs a textbox in the Taskbar. Type in a search without opening IE first. This is cool. Has links to a bunch of sites to search, including CDDB. Here is a link...

MachineHead

Thanks for sharing this with us! I just installed the toolbar and it's oustanding. I love the pop-up calendar and the people finder function.

Shelly,

Your welcome. In the article it says he was one of Microsofts original IE developers. Have been playing around with it for a while now. Works very well.

I thought that title looked familiar!

A few months ago, I found a site called VirtualPlastic that showed me a JavaScript command I could use to make an HTML page into a toolbar.  I've been using it ever since to display my TrackInfo page for MJ inside my taskbar!!

The site mentions Dave's Quick Search Deskbar as using similar functionality...  It also has some other taskbar and desktop enhancements.  Check it out:

Awesome tips - thanks MachineHead and Swordsman74. I've been experimenting with Active Desktop, trying to get some utility out of my mostly unused desktop. These will go a long way toward complicating my interface

Say, this VP thing for the toolbar. When I enter the javascript it adds the window to the toolbar but nothing else. Let me ask, do I have to specify what folder from the filepath to add? I'm assuming that this is it, but don't want to get myself in too deep.

Also, if this is the case, MJ can be listed and launched from it?

Thanks for the assist, KingSparta - that's what I get for being in a hurry...

Machinehead, yeah - you have to enter the folder and filename of the html page you want to show up...  For example, here's the string I use to show my "Complete Vert" trackinfo page:

javascript:window.location.replace("file://c:/Program Files/Media Jukebox/Visualizations/Track Info/Complete Vert/generated.html")

Just a note - if you are planning on displaying a trackinfo page like I am doing, you have to make sure you set the page to auto-refresh using a META tag in the section - otherwise the page won't change once it is in the toolbar.  I didn't notice any perceptible change to CPU usage or memory after adding the refresh, so that shouldn't be a concern...

When I read this thread I wondered if Dave's Quick Search.... would work with my browser - Opera. It does and worked fine from the first time I tried it. I didn't have to configure it for Opera, it just used it from scratch. So, thank you Machinehead for the tip.

By the way, does anyone else use Opera? Very fast, with many features that make it a breeze to navigate. I'd hate to have to go back to one of the other browsers.

Thanks Swordsman74. I thought that may have been the case. Messing with javascript tho isn't one of my specialties. I'd probably have entered something that wipes out my drives!!!
